History:
The Dzerzhinskov Principalities were once a loose confederation of states, sharing a distinctive culture but lacking in political unity. Its princes were notorious for campaigning against one another, warring for the crown and title of ‘Grand Prince of Dzerzhinskov.’ Prior to the Survaek Empire’s subjugation of Dzerzhinskov, the sons of the late Grand Prince Vsevolod fought a three-way civil war for control of their father’s throne. The warring ended after two of them had perished during the fighting, leaving Bogdan I as the only successor. At the time of his ascension, the principalities were still pagan, and the Empire had not yet encroached north enough to make contact with them.
As an initially strong believer of Dzerzhinskov’s pagan faith, Bogdan was admired by the principalities and hailed as the “brother the gods saw fit to rule.” Dzerzhinskov’s principalities were beginning to grow more unified, and their princes were oathbound to Bogdan under a new secular decree. It was not long until the Survaek Empire had finished its campaign against the Eshara and pressed farther on. The principalities were alarmed by news of its military prowess, carving through the northlands like a blade through flesh. Bogdan used the threat posed by the Empire to consolidate his leadership further, calling the druzhinas, or private armies of the princes, under his command in times of war.
However, imperial influence came not in the form of armies, but missionaries. Representatives from the south had moved north from the recently-converted Kingdom of Cerdigion, investigating lands beyond those which it already had in its grip. Grand Prince Bogdan I initially perceived these representatives as a threat, but his mind was changed after several meetings with the southerners. When compared to the technological might and influence of the Empire, Dzerzhinskov was sorely behind. Believing casting his lot with a modern religion would create a vessel for strengthening Dzerzhinskov, Bogdan allowed himself to be baptized, formally converting the principalities to Aedekom faith.
While Bogdan publicly acknowledges the new faith, he continues to promote values and cultural traditions of the old gods to his subjects within Dzerzhinskov. The principalities have enjoyed association with the Survaek Empire as new trade routes have contributed to its economy. Its soldiery has undergone modernization and development of modern tactics to supplement its traditional methods of warfare.
