By far the largest battle of the War of Sefti Succession would be fought without either monarch present to observe, let alone command. Instead, the greatest general of each realm had been tasked with overseeing their respective armies. Without prideful Cadoc or enraged Athinea leading in the field, the air of the battle took on a calmer character, like a game of chess in which each player conceded a certain sense of respect to the other even as mortal enemies.
The Cerdigonian army advanced methodically, while the Sefti ranks formed up neatly. Then the forest stood still. It was time for the first move.
ORDER OF BATTLE:
Kingdom of Cerdigon (cerdigon) Vanguard COMMANDER: Duke Agricola (Explorer) -- 1,000 peasant elven pike -- 689 Dwarven Sellsword Light Infantry -- 427 Elven Peasant Archers Main force COMMANDER: Eurion Giantslayer (General) -- Vardic Whitestag (Sylph) (Warrior / Melee) -- 500 Lancers (Wild Hunt) -- 500 Horse Archers (Wild Hunt) -- 2,000 Light Infantry -- 1,000 Longbowman -- 4,500 peasant roundshier -- 2,000 peasant archers -- 3,000 city shock troops
Kingdom of Sefti (Ravigen) -- COMMANDER: Princess Merithea Sefti (General) -- Gwendolyn Castlestone (Dwarf) (Explorer) -- Grugi Facebitter (Goblin)(Warrior/Melee) -- Priest Retinue -- 3,854 Orcish Musket Militia (4 units) - Mercenary Contract with Firetooth Clan (Talis) -- 3,564 Elven City Shock Troops (3 units) -- 1,068 Elven City Pikes (2 units) -- 2,000 Elven City Roundshiers (2 units) -- 876 Elven Peasant Archers (1 unit) -- 1,406 Elven Peasant Roundshiers (2 units)
NOTES:
Sefti troops benefit from Hated Rival: Cerdigon - troops fighting rival have increased morale and ferocity
There is a somewhat elevated clearing behind the Sefti army (in-between the forest and the mountains), which Sefti troops can reach in 1 modmark if so desired, at the risk of losing these troops in a rout if Cerdigon has a clear path to pursue
Duke Agricola's vanguard is still ahead of the Cerdigonian main force, but only a short distance. In the beginning moments, it is the only section of the Cerdigionian army in range to give and receive archer fire (the Longbows do not yet have a clear shot).

The crump of leaves and branches underfoot grew as the Cerdigonian army advanced methodically towards their foe. Bows twanged as arrows were loosed, cutting the still air with a scream or a curse as the Seftian archers and their Orcish hirelings replied in kind. Hugging the treeline as they advanced, the Dwarven sellswords along with the Elvish archers formed a screen. Captain Stoneboot grunted, waiting for the inevitable volley from the Orcish muskets. Like many of his men, he was using the trees to cover their advance, already a particularly large oak tree had taken a bullet that was meant for his chest.
'' FORWARD YOU BASTARDS! '' He shouted towards his men. The Orc's had broken before relatively easily. A smile slid over his wolfish features, the enemy would do so again. Meanwhile, Duke Agricola was bringing up the rear of the advance guard, while the skirmishers pressed forward. Thousands of Sylph's were following in their wake.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- '' Vardic, you have your orders. '' Eurion Giantslayer snarled as the Sylph warriors took to the sky. Two thousand Sylph warriors followed along with him. The Seftian's hadn't been the only one's whom had seen the clearing. It was a perfect landing zone for the Sylph's to take and harass the enemy from behind while the main lines pushed forward for the inevitable contact. Vardic Whitestag, along with a complement of light infantry and archers had been ordered to seize it. They would fly up and over the treeline and then swoop down behind the enemy and into the clearing. Meanwhile, the Wild Hunt was moving in for the kill. Five hundred horse archers were continually harassing the Orc skirmish line on the right flank. On the left flank, the lancers were held in reserve, waiting to ride down any Seftian troops that attacked towards the landing Cerdigonian Sylphs in order to support them. The longbowman (while not yet in range) were preparing to support the army by targeting the center of the Seftian force for the inevitable charge. The Cerdigonian shock troops made up the center of the formation with roundshier and light infantry deployed on the left and right flanks.
NOTES:
-- Vardic Whitestag (Champion / Warrior / Melee) seizes the initiative and takes 1,000 light infantry and 1000 peasent archers, taking flight over the treetops. He will drop down onto the clearing and seize it, advancing behind the Seftian battle line in order to surprise them.
-- Duke Agricola organizes the vanguard into a skirmishing force, with the archers providing a screen for the advancing troops.
-- Horse archers attack the Orc skirmish line on the right flank, while 500 lancers on the left are held in reserve, waiting to either be committed to the attack on the Seftian battle line or to engage troops moving for the clearing.
-- The main Cerdigonian army (shocktroops at the center) and peasent roundshier / light infantry making up the flank, advances towards the Seftian battlelines, using the trees as cover from Orc gunfire. They are supported in their advance by longbowman and archers.

The silence of the battlefield was about to be shattered, and for better or for worse this would be a deciding battle of the war. Merithea was prepared to die here, she was even more prepared to kill as many Sylph’s as she possible could before that happened.
They were marching closer now, soon the wait would be over, she could see the anxiety on the faces of her soldiers, could feel the tension, she felt it herself at times, but she was hardly going to let that get in the way of her doing what absolutely needed to be done.
“Elves of Sefti! The Usurper’s men march towards us now, they are coming with greed in their hearts, greed for our land, for our people, Cadoc has always selfishly yearned for everything beyond his borders. But Sefti is ours! It does not matter how many he throws at us, we will always fight back, we will always rise to battle his treachery.”
She had their attention now, hands clenched around bows and spears and swords as they stared ahead, transfixed at the sound of the marching Sylph’s, the rage and determination on their face made her smile, they would fight to the death.
“They outnumber us, but that hardly matters, for every one of you injured, cripple 10 of them! For every ten of you slain, kill 100 of them! For every one hundred of you slaughtered you will massacre them by the thousands! “
There was a roar of approval, spears clanked on the ground, swords smacked against shields, making such an unspeakable sound that she was almost swept away by it as thousands of elves began to scream and chant, smacking their shields like madmen drowning out the sound of the marching Sylph’s she hoped they could hear their death approaching.
“Kill the Sylphs! Pluck their wings! Death to the Traitor, boil the skin from their flesh!” The chant grew every iteration, Merithea hadn’t really told them to say that, they were doing it all on their own, and doing a good job of it or so she thought.
Tomar-Re, the elven priest nodded his head solemnly, he stepped forward to address the army, the silence returning again as he addressed the crowd.
“Elves of Sefti, Orcs of the Firetooth, today we go to battle against the enemies of the faith, the pagan Sylphs of Cerdigon lack conviction, they fight because they are ordered to, you fight for something greater than yourself, you fight for Sefti, and for the Aed. Today we go with the blessings of the Aed, the Sylphs will be driven from our lands and into the depths from whence they came.”
With the priest's blessing the cheering and chanting redoubled as the elves roared their approval. She could see them now, snarling and ready to fight.
“Today we slaughter them by the bushel, the forest will run red with their blood! Generations from now the people of Cerdigon will remember this battle with fear in their hearts! The very mention of this battle will cause them to piss themselves and pray to their impotent gods!
Then it started, arrows and gunfire exploded from both sides and it was with surprise that she saw the Wild Hunt in the fray, ‘Cavalry in a forest’ Eurion was getting desperate maybe? Then she caught a glimpse of movement over the treetops, which explained it all.
He’s sending troops ahead to the clearing, they’ll harass us from behind while the main force attacks from the front, clever Eurion but I can work with that.
There were probably more cavalry waiting to hit them once they moved for the clearing but she would deal with them easily enough, right now she needed to worry about positioning her troops.
“Retreat to the clearing, Half the muskets in front, shock behind them.” A portion of the muskets formed into position while the shock formed behind them. If the Sylphs were in the clearing then they would be exposed in the open and prime for a volley from the muskets, the shock would follow behind them to mop up the survivors, Grugi as well, he would need the exercise.
“Pikes, form up and prepare to march, watch for enemy cavalry.”
The Pikes would follow the line, waiting for the inevitable cavalry charge and prepared to halt it in it’s tracks. Their formation would not be as effective in a forest but the cavalry would be far worse off than them, as a precaution she’d detail some melee troops to support them.
“Rear Guard! Support our retreat.” This time it was her archers and the rest of the muskets who moved, they would skirmish with the advancing force, just enough to slow their movements and keep them from catching up to her army on the march. -- The Priest blesses the army and travels with the shock troops to inspire them. 3,000 orcish muskets march to the clearing, they will fire a volley at the exposed Sylphs before letting 3,000 City shock troops charge into the fray alongside Grugi Facebiter (Warrior/Melee).
The Elvish pike will march beside the formation, prepared to intercept any charging cavalry They will be supported by 564 shock troops. They will break the enemy charge and disengage slowly alongside the rear guard,
The rear guard will consist of the Archers and remaining muskets, supported by 500 city roundshier and 500 peasant roundshier, they will skirmish with the advancing lines and slow them down as best as possible while the rest of the army marches.
Once the clearing is secured the Sefti army will form up in the clearing to prepare for the oncoming enemy, muskets lined up to fire, pikes (who will hopefully have been able to fight off the enemy cavalry) prepared to march in front, roundshier and shock on the side

The ClearingThe Sylph peasants were panting, and even the professionals had broken a sweat after the flying sprint over the treetops and to the clearing. For his own part, Vardic Whitestag had flown much harder than this in his life, but he didn't immediately order an attack for the sake of his troops. After all, they had made it, and were now in position to flank the enemy Eurion was undoubtedly charging from his own side. The elves would crumple like dried wheat stalks between the two attacks, Vardic Whitestag was certain. But what he couldn't have anticipated was that the Giantslayer hadn't, in fact, ordered any sort of mass charge, but was rather advancing slowly and methodically through the forest. The only attack he would see this day would be one on his own troops. It began when thousands upon thousands of orcs emerged from the forest in a wide, uneven line, outstretching anything Whitestag could have mustered to counter it. They stood some seventy meters from the Cerdigonian He considered rushing their lines, but suspected the damage of up-close fire would be far more devastating than letting them have their volley from a greater distance. This moment of hesitation, however, did not keep the Sylph Archers from moving forward to skirmish with the newcomers. Stop. Face the enemy. Light wood match. Three-thousand Firetooth, muskets already loaded, formed their irregular ranks and began preparing their matchlocks. The whizz and patter of arrows was an unwelcome harassment, wounding several orcs in the middle of their setup, but overall the smattering of enemy archers hardly affected the formation. Apply wood match to slow-match. Check lock. Press stock to shoulder. Aim. Another few gargles and groans rose from the orcish ranks as the arrows kept coming. But now they were ready. The sylphs had had their fun. Fire."FIRE!" The order was only audible for a moment. Immediately afterwards, it was drowned out by nearly three-thousand pops, which accumulated into what sounded more like a roar. Gunsmoke erupted from the orcish lines in a succession of flashes, shrouding them in billows of grey-white. On the Cerdigonian side, the sheer weight of fire was devastating. Peasant archers were blown away as clouds of blood and flesh blasted out of the backs of sylphs, and the skirmish line was scattering in all directions before the musket volley was even finished. Further back, the light infantry's bronze shields and armor did nothing to protect them from the hail of shot. The front ranks were poked full of holes in a panoply of clanks, clacks, and splutters...followed by horrible cries of pain. A few stray shots even reached the rear, ignobly wounding some of Vardic's handpicked warriors before they could taste the blood of their enemies up close. And unlike in their last battle, the elves executed their advance past the muskets perfectly. Vardic had hardly wiped the blood out of his eyes before he saw hordes of Sefti troops and banners emerging from the smoke ahead. If he wasn't mistaken, there were goblins in the mix too...the warriors of his rival glory-hound Grugi Facebitter, no doubt. He didn't need the strategic brilliance of Eurion to tell him defeat was certain, but if he was going to die, he would do it the Warrior Way. " Loyal soldiers of Cerdigon! The elven bastards of the Usurper Queen descend on us like vultures! Those scum have the gall to think we'll go down like a wounded deer! Let's show them they're fucking with the wrong animal! CHAAAARGE!" "KILL THE ELVES!" the battle-cry rose across the diminished Sylph ranks who, despite their hopeless situation, charged valiantly with their commander into the fray. "KILL THE SYLPHS!" the far more numerous elves replied, before the two lines crashed into one another. In the first moments, the well-organized Sylph downhill counter-charge and the light infantry's tenacity caught the Sefti off-guard. In comparison, their own charge was rather uneven, and they suffered for it as the sylphs bashed and hacked their way into the elven ranks with shields and swords. But Vardic's moment of glory was short-lived. The shock troops of Sefti, lead by the mighty warriors of the champion Grugi Facebitter, easily encircled their outnumbered foes. With many of the Sylph infantry wounded and exhausted, they soon lost their momentum. From there, they were essentially slaughtered like pigs. Only Whitestag's master soldiers were able to hold their own, but even they were losing far too many warriors far too quickly. They and their commander would fight to the bitter end. Stories and songs would tell of the last stand of Vardic Whitestag, who cut down over twenty elves and nine goblins before a claymore reached his head just a little too quickly, reducing its upper half to a spray of brain and bone. These same verses would also struggle with the question of why the famous General Eurion Giantslayer sent the flanking force ahead without bothering to speed up his own conservative advance, condemning the great warrior to a suicide mission. Some would cite callousness, others incompetence, but the most popular theories would deal with fatalistic signs and omens of Aed telling of punishment for King Cadoc's crimes, for which Whitestag became the sacrifice. _ The ForestWhile the front section of Grugi and his shock-troops had made it to the clearing with near-perfect timing, the rest of Princess Merithea's main army was not so lucky. The lancers of the Wild Hunt were loathe to let her forces simply fall back to the clearing without a fight. The pikes did their best to hold the cavalry off, managing to stop their initial attacks and even tether some of the mercenaries in a lopsided melee, but overall the lancers were far better adapted to hitting and running than the pikes were to countering it. With the forest forcing them into a loose and irregular formation, the lancers did not gamble on any full-on charges into the enemy ranks. Rather, they contented themselves with hitting the enemy along their sides, eating away at the edges of roundshier formations with lances and swords. The fast mounts and capable riders were able to repeat these maneuvers several times with little interference from the slower pike infantry, slowing the Princess' advance enough to leave her dangerously far behind Grugi's contingent. Meanwhile, the Rear Guard was having its own struggles. They had been winning against Agricola's screen by numerical superiority and the support of orcish muskets, but the arrival of longbows and cavalry archers complicated matters dramatically. Muskets were powerful, but hardly a match for the accurate fire of professional longbowmen in the forest environment. In accordance with Merithea's orders, the Rear Guard began falling back, but they simply could not shake off the horse archers on their flank. This meant disruption in the skirmish line and more difficulty moving, which in turn meant the Cerdigonian archers were catching up too quickly. Stuck between the disturbingly rapid and precise arrow fire from the Longbows and enfilading fire from the Horse Archers, the orcish skirmishers decided to hasten their retreat, making a run for the clearing to join their comrades in more favorable terrain. The elvish archers and roundshiers, on the other hand, were more concerned about the fact that they could see Princess' Athinea's banner still in the forest. They steered their maneuvers towards her formation, redoubling their efforts to slow the enemy along the way. But their numbers were getting thinned out, making them less and less effective as a barrier. Many captains were beginning to think they might have to choose between sacrificing themselves outright to cover their General's advance to the clearing, or continuing the established plan at the risk of letting the sylphs reach her too soon. __________ RESULTS AND CASUALTIESKingdom of Cerdigon loses the clearing but succeeds in slowing down Athinea's main army!Clearing -- 599 Sylph Peasant Archers, unit SHATTERED (cannot participate in the rest of battle) -- 1,000 Sylph Light Infantry, unit ANNIHILATED -- 200 Warriors + Vardic Whitestag, retinue ANNIHILATED Forest -- 73 Lancers (Wild Hunt) -- 14 Horse Archers (Wild Hunt) -- 102 Elven Peasant Archers -- 37 Sylph Peasant Archers -- 8 Sylph Longbowmen Kingdom of Sefti takes the clearing in a glorious volley and charge, but the situation in the forest is getting sticky!Clearing -- 215 Orc City Muskets -- 586 City Shock Infantry -- 28 Warriors (Retinue) Forest -- 38 City Pikes -- 10 City Shock Infantry -- 161 Elven Peasant Roundshiers -- 125 Elven City Roundshiers -- 201 Orc City Muskets, unit RETREATING to more concentrated friendly forces against orders -- 317 Elven Peasant Archers *All units attached to Princess Merithea (General) are SLOWED

Duke Agricola cringed as an arrow sailed past his head. It was just a bit too close for comfort. His troops were advancing through the thick brush at a near breakneck pace to catch the retreating Seftian's. Clashes we're breaking out all around him, the stench of blood and death, the screams of the dying, not only here but in the clearing up ahead... .The situation was becoming grim, but Agricola knew that their was no going back for him. Queen Athena would put his head on a pike. With one smooth motion, he slammed his longsword down between the shoulder blades of a crawling Seftian soldier that had been left behind in the retreat. The man's scream was cut short as the Duke cleaned the gore from his blade with his cloak. It was going to be a bloody day.
Either he would emerge as Duke Agricola, advisor to King Aeron, the hero to the one true King....
Or he would emerge as Agricola...the traitor...and his head would decorate a spike outside the capital.
There would be no retreat.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eurion had underestimated how fast the enemy could disengage, wheel in the thick forested terrain, and destroy his flanking forces in the clearing. All the while holding back his massive force with only a small rearguard.
Astounding.
The situation could still be recovered however. With the enemy rushing towards the clearing, the Cerdigonian's still had one key advantage. Cavalry. While the clearing lay ahead, the retreating Seftian's would have to push through nearly a thousand horse to reach them as the cavalry placed themselves between the clearing and the retreating lines of infantry
'' CHARGE! '' Under the hail of longbow's and supporting archers, the shocktroops of the Cerdigonian army powered forward. Claymore's carved a red swathe through enemy pike formations while the cavalry did their best to keep the retreating enemy troops within the forest and destroy them, Eurion now unleashed waves of light infantry whom were adept in the forested terrain and experienced in this kind of fighting. Over caution had burdened him before but now Eurion's blood was up. What was left of the Seftian force would not reach the forest clearing alive of that he was determined. Once the last of the retreating army was dispatched, Eurion would reconsolidate his line and advance into the clearing under the covering fire of his longbowman.
'' BRING ME MERITHEA'S HEAD! '' Eurion roared.
Notes:
-- Using their cavalry to ride ahead and slow the enemies retreat, Eurion brings the full force of his army on the Seftian's. Shocktroops are used to crack the pike formations while horse archers (pushing through and attempting to get infront of the enemy alongside the lancers), archers, and longbowman continued to harass the units that are attempting to link up with the enemy troops. Light infantry and roundshiers, using their superior speed will charge into the slowed retreating formations in the forest.
-- The enemy will effectively be cut into two parts. If and when the fleeing Seftian troops are dealt with in the forest, Eurion will reconsolidate his troops before beginning preparations to take the clearing.

The elven rear guard weren’t liking their chances, the enemy were charging now and those mercenaries had successfully slowed the princess down enough to keep her from the clearing. They had little choice now, none of them really liked the idea of dying but their princess’s safety was at stake and their land. They were more than prepared to die for that.
As one veteran put it, they would rather die than let Cerdigon boots set one foot in the capital or in their villages. If their sacrifice could buy the princess enough time to get to the clearing and defeat the Sylph menace then they would happily sacrifice their lives.
The archers were given the order to fire one more volley into the enemy before returning to the main force to help the princess break through. The remaining roundshier steeled themselves and with a roar charged the charging Cerdigon lines, every minute they bought would hopefully but the princess the time she needed. -- Further ahead Merithea stared straight ahead, the cavalry were formed to slow them down from the clearing, they would force the Sefti army to be bogged down fighting them until Eurion closed and slaughtered them. Well the board was set, it was do or die now. She turned to one of her attendants, and nodded silently; the attendant pulled a horn from his belt and proceeded to blow into it, attempting to send a signal to the clearing to send troops to aid in the advance.
That done she looked to her troops and smiled at their determined faces, they may have been nervous but they were going to fight and that’s all she needed to know.
“Shock Troops! Charge ahead, pikes behind them, roundshier with me! Scatter the cavalry and get to the clearing, for our fallen comrades, for Sefti!” The roar that followed was devastating as the Sefti lines advanced with all speed. -- In the clearing itself, Grugi Facebiter frowned at the empty woodland ahead of them, Merithea should have arrived by now, it was slightly worrying that she wasn’t but that wasn’t a big problem right? Maybe she was just ahead in the woodland and would be right out?
Faintly he thought he could hear a blast of a horn, but he wasn’t sure, one of the captains however was rather sure. “The princess is in trouble, we need to assist her.” The man’s conviction was noticeable and Grugi supposed he would know more about such signals than he did, after all he was here for the glory and battle. The ideology was nice but Grugi went where the battles were.
He quickly gave the signal for a number of shock troops to follow him to regroup with Merithea, at best they would link up and march back to the clearing at worst they’d fight a bit and then march back to the clearing. -- The roundshier of the rear guard charge the Cerdigon lines in a suicidal attempt to slow them down no matter how slight
The archers regroup with Merithea and proceed to engage the Wild Hunt cavalry, the shock troops charging first, followed by pike and then roundshier.
Grugi facebiter and 2000 shock troops go to regroup with Merithea.
They will attempt to break through the Wild Hunt and continue to the clearing to reconsolidate their lines.

The remaining roundshiers of the Sefti Rear Guard valiantly charged at their enemies for the sake of their commander. Unfortunately, the few-hundred tired soldiers were little more than a drop in the bucket compared to the thousands of Sylphs they faced. They were swatted aside like flies by the sea of Cerdigonian shock infantry. Even worse, the Sefti had so few archers remaining they couldn't hope to suppress Agricola's skirmish line, bolstered by more peasants and a unit of professional longbows. The deadly shower of arrows compounded Merithea's present difficulties in reforming and redirecting her forces, especially now that her roundshiers were facing their backs to the enemy. She had no choice: The bulk of her infantry would have to turn to engage the enemy with the best shieldwall they could manage. The clash was legendary in scale, reminiscent of the great battles Cadoc and Jotheim had fought before the Great Conquest. Upon approaching the elven lines, the Cerdigonian claymore-wielders gave a final burst of speed with their wings to pummel the enemy shieldwall. They were helped by the numerous roundshiers and light infantry on their flanks, who encircled the Princess' complement. This immediately put Merithea in danger, as Sylph archers directed their fire towards the inner ranks of her formation to avoid friendly fire, and several of her bodyguards found longbow arrows stuck in their armor and flesh. At least the pikes and their supporting shock troops made it to the enemy cavalry line. The Wild Hunt, already struggling to stay cohesive in the thick forest, were far too close to the onslaught by the time they managed to pull ahead. Without time to gather momentum, they were forced into a melee on unfavorable terms. Though most of the horse archers succeeded in pulling away and harassing their attackers, the lancers were stuck. Their fate was sealed when the blast of a horn announced the arrival of Grugi Facebitter and two-thousand elven shock troops, who cut off all hope of escape. The lancers, pitifully immobile, were sandwiches and cut down to the last rider, save a few lucky souls who fled into the wild. But perhaps their sacrifice would mean something: Grugi's force had now lost its own momentum, and the rejoined shock troops and pikes were beginning to take longbow fire in addition to the more sporadic arrows from the horse archers. The turning point of the battle had arrived. Decisions made now would be the difference between victory and defeat. __________ RESULTS AND CASUALTIES
Kingdom of Cerdigon sacrifices its lancers to connect with Princess Merithea's main army with overwhelming force and numbers!
Casualties -- Lancer Unit ANNIHILATED (Wild Hunt) -- 58 Horse Archers (Wild Hunt) -- 83 Elven Peasant Archers -- 16 Sylph Peasant Archers -- 554 Sylph City Shock Infantry -- 322 Elven Peasant Pikes -- 30 Dwarven Light Infantry -- 191 Sylph Peasant Roundshiers -- 27 Sylph Light Infantry Kingdom of Sefti clears a path between its separated forces, but its General is in grave danger!
-- 95 Elven City Pikes -- 21 Elven City Shock Infantry -- 1091 Elven Peasant Roundshiers, 1 unit ANNIHILATED -- 914 Elven City Roundshiers, 1 unit ANNIHILATED -- 132 Elven Peasant Archers -- 6 Bodyguard (Princess Merithea Sefti - General)

The Great Forest
The battle in the forest was becoming pitched. Captain Stoneboot was bleeding, crimson trickling down his forehead. He didn't know if it was all his blood, his arm had grown so tired from swinging his hammer. It was caked with bits of skull and brain matter. He nimbly dodged out of the way of an elf with a gigantic claymore, the creatures movement swinging such a large weapon in the forest was awkward. It allowed the shorter dwarf to slip under the elf's guard and bring his hammer crashing against his ribcage. Bones shattered and popped, the elf gave a squeal, tumbling to his knees before Stoneboot gave his namesake literal meaning by crushing his head with four short stomps of his boot. The dwarven sellswords were applying heavy pressure on the flanks, along with Cerdigonian light infantry and roundshiers. Meanwhile, the shock troops were attempting to carve their way through the rapidly depleting ranks of the enemy. The arrival of the enemy elven shocktroops changed little. It was a bloody slog and the Cerdigonian's had the enemy trapped in a noose, the only way for the enemy to survive was either to bring in more troops from the clearing...or try to retreat. Either way would take time.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eurion watched the bloody melee in a detached manner as his forces attempted to break through to seize the Princess. The arrival of the enemy reinforcements was troubling but the enemy front could not hold for long against his continued attacks. The Cerdigonian's held the numerical advantage in the forest and without ranged support the enemy were sitting ducks as they came streaming in. It would take valuable time for the orc's to be committed to the attack and now Eurion ordered the coup d'grace.
'' ARCHERS! '' Longbowman and peasants alike nocked their bows. '' FIRE! '' Volley after volley hammered the Elven shocktroops as they came streaming in piecemeal. Their arrival it seemed had been delayed by the lancers that Eurion had deployed as a screen in the front. Once the battle was joined, the archers would turn their attention to launching volleys into their rear ranks so as to avoid friendly fire. Meanwhile, the horse archers had reformed since their earlier retreat and now came back with a vengeance to lead an attack on the Seftian rear. The horse archers would feign attacks, attempting to draw the shocktroops into a merry chase before turning and loosing volley after volley into the rear ranks of the enemy. It was under this shower of arrows that the Cerdigonian's attempted to collapse the last vestiges of resistance from the Seftian army.
NOTES:
-- The Cerdigonian army attempts to squeeze the Seftian's from four sides using their superior numbers. Roundshier and light infantry attack the left and right flanks while Cerdigonian shock troops attempt to fight their way through the Seftian center and to the Princess. Horse archers are launching attacks on the Seftian rear and attempting to keep the princess penned in.
-- Elven reinforcements that are coming from the clearing and into the fight are being targeted by longbowman, peasent archers, and the horse archers. Specifically, Grugi Facebiter's shocktroops and pikes that have now since lost their momentum from the earlier fight and have slowed. It is hoped that under this constant stream of pressure on multiple fronts that the Seftian army will collapse and bring the battle to an end.

They had been forced into a pitched battle and they were losing, but perhaps that was a good thing? The way behind them was still open, they could still get to the clearing, really it was their only chance at this point, Grugi's charge had been halted but his troops were still out of the melee. She only hoped he wised up to her plan quickly, otherwise this would fail spectacularly.
She'd try anyways of course.
"To the clearing! Retreat to the clearing!" she gave the order quickly pushing her men forwards, or backwards in this case, a full retreat was her only option, and even then it was more likely to fail than succeed but they'd do their best.
If they could just stay together enough to draw Eurion's frenzied troops after them, then the orcish muskets in the clearing could devastate the enemy charge and turn the tide possibly.
--
Grugi facebiter was no fool, the minute he heard the retreat he quickly gave orders to the shock troops and began to hurry them back to the clearing, staying here and getting pelted by the horse archers, they'd go on ahead to the clearing and set up a defensive line, prepare the muskets to fire on the Cerdigon troops.
--
Merithea orders a full retreat to the clearing by all forces.
Grugi facebiter (Warrior/Melee) takes the shock troops and pike to the clearing to prepare a defensive line and ready the muskets.

Gwendolyn Castlestone was panting: eyes burning, throat dry as sand, legs crying out in pain. But she couldn't stop running, not with the mess behind her. It wasn't a rout...it was something more disturbing. Loyal troops who had followed the call of horns and drums to retreat, but who could hardly disengage before the enemy was at their backs. Soldiers who, rather than surrender to the likes of their foes, fought on without any cohesion, getting slaughtered in pockets where the lives of ten elves were the price for felling a single sylph. Only Gwendolyn and her band, the Princess and her bodyguards, and scattered archers who had stood behind the roundshiers could hope to outrun the carnage and make it to the clearing. But then the dwarf's well-honed ears picked up the faint the sound of hooves. No. No, no NO, Aed, please not today... She was an explorer for hire, who wanted to die braving treacherous mountains or charting cursed forests. Not like this, in a heap of corpses murdered senselessly in war. But if she would have to die a warrior's death, she would show a warrior's commitment to her commander. "GENERAL! ENEMY CAVALRY INCOMI--" Schpunk! The longbow arrow lodged itself in the dwarven woman's neck, piercing through the spine and sticking out the throat. She was out in an instant, without even a gurgle or gasp. But she had managed to get the message through, and for this she would be remembered. It gave the peasants and bodyguards time to prepare their defense, and inevitable demise, in sacrifice for the Princess. _ Princess Merithea Sefti arrived at the orcish musket line alone save for her banner-man. She might have considered making a stand in the clearing if there had been even a single battalion of survivors accompanying her, but that was not the case. As it was, she would ensure the sacrifices of her soldiers were not in vain. "Send word to Grugi Facebitter to sound a full retreat! Matchlockmen, you will cover our backs from the Sylph-scum! On the double!" _ The ensuing, sporadic skirmishes would stretch over days. In the dense forest, the Wild Hunt was just a little too slow and a little too disorganized to push through several layers of musket-fire, though they snatched many prizes for Eurion in the form of prisoners. The Cerdigonian general's decision to regroup and reorganize before pushing for the clearing had cost him the opportunity to annihilate Merithea's army completely, but it had also saved him the doubtless horrific casualties he would have taken assaulting the pike-and-shot formation in the clearing with tired, disorganized troops. Only two days into the pursuit, Captain Stoneboot announced the end of his contract with the "True Sefti Royal Army." It wasn't that he couldn't have kept fighting, but the Duke's purse was drying up and the wild goose chase was causing his lads to grumble. They had done good work, after all, and they ought to be able to celebrate in a proper inn, not at a campfire in some godforsaken elven forest. The next day, the Wild Hunt vanished. Perhaps it was the word spreading of the bounty on their heads, or perhaps it was the fact that their payment for the coming Spring was nowhere to be seen. So the skirmishes grew more grueling, archers exchanging shots with musketeers sometimes for hours at a time, but the bulk of the armies never met despite General Eurion's best efforts. In the end, the battered remains of Princess Merithea's army reached the Sefti capital intact, where they could recover under the protection of Vaekirate troops...if only for a time. __________ RESULTS AND CASUALTIES
