Second Battle of the Ryn River
The combined Vinayan and Almur army had crossed the Ryn river despite the initial slight resistance posed by Elonese Rangers who had failed to delay the armies advance in time for the main Elonese force to arrive. When scouts had reported that the massed Elonese army was marching on their position, the Vinyan army had chosen to take the high ground on 'Lombardo's Hill' (named for the Vinayan commander). While the hill offered elevation, it was not significant enough to mass the entire Vinayan army. Instead, the Vinayan flanks stretched on the flatter open ground on the right and left, and no doubt they would be the vulnerable sections of the Vinayan lines. The Elonese could not afford to turn back now. High Protector Oswin needed a victory and crushing the smaller Vinayan Army would provide a much needed morale boost to the beleaguered Elonese Royal Army. The Elonese army, with its massed ranks of noble heavy cavalry, would not be able to maneuver effectively on the muddy banks of the river. Yet they were sure to prove to be a powerful if they managed to close with the enemy. Behind them came massed ranks of conscripts, hastily raised from the nobles estates, the countryside, and from the capital itself.
The Vinayan Army had effectively placed its back to the river. If they broke, the damage would be insurmountable. While the hastily constructed pontoon bridge could be crossed effectively in good weather, in the chaos of a retreat, there would be no room to withdraw the entire army. Furthermore, not all of the Vinayan's great baggage trains with its wagons full of ammunition had managed to complete the crossing. Lombardo had prioritized getting his men across first. In a prolonged battle, ammunition, especially for the cannons could become a problem.
The opening boom of Vinayan cannons on the hill signaled the start of the battle.
Elonese rangers, dismounted, began to move forward in a loose skirmish line.
The crack of muskets and the wisps of powder from weapons discharge began rising.
So too would the screams.
SUMMARY
-- The Vinayan Army has taken a defensive position with its back to the river, any retreat across the lone bridge will be costly.
-- Vinayan Artillery will have improved accuracy from its position on the hill.
-- Weather is cloudy with light rain, the ground around the river is muddy. Movement MALUS for all forces.
