Chapter I: The Kharokian Reforms
The Reasons for Reform
If anything could be directly noted as the cause of the Kharokian Reforms it would be the dire state at which the Gospodar's military could be found following the great conflagration that was the Great Northern War. Despite the Gospodar's victory over their opponents within Imperial Eshara, most notably against those forces deployed by the Berrandan Imperial monarch, the Gospodars revealed a great deal of weakness within their armies. It was discovered that the tribal organization of the Gospodar's armed forces, as it was during the migration and before, was to be swiftly proven obsolete in the modern world. It would be under Harcur Kharok, the first and only heir to the fledgling Almuric state, that the reforms would take shape. With his aging father's blessings, Harcur Kharok used his experience from his upbringing in New Byrnis, Berranda, and in the South to bring about modern military reform within what was then the United Holds.
Beyond the flaws revealed by the tribal nature of the Gospodar's armed forces during the Great Northern War, a number of issues with the military were revealed during these earliest periods of the reform. By and large due to traditional Almur laws regarding war it was found that the United Holds struggled when dealing with their newfound multiracial nation. An inability, or perhaps an unwillingness, to recruit and field Dwarven troops beyond small and specific units led to a considerable waste of national manpower and an increasingly divisive state within the armed forces. In addition, the tribalist behaviors of the Almur led to a number of cohesion problems and armies struggle to mesh with each other which subsequently reduced combat effectiveness considerably. Faced with such issues, Harcur Kharok brought in the assistance of a number of knowledgeable and ultimately crucial advisers with the most notable being Sokollogulu Origm Osman Saraskar, first son of the Lord of the East.
The Reforms Take Shape
Beginning in the early spring of the year 866 Harcur Kharok Szaboyar-Szekeres began his vigorous and admittedly ambitious reforms. With the help of numerous advisers, including his long-time friend and supporter Sokollogulu Origm Osman, the experimental phases of the reformation began. For a period of a year the advisers of Kharok were sent on numerous missions to nations across the North and South in an interest of determining the qualities necessary to make for a modern and effective fighting force. The nations that garnered the most attention of these early military observers were the Firetooth, for their world famous militias, the Berrandans, for the boundless professionalism, and the Khaitis Realms, for their rightly-feared discipline. These and many others were observed and painstakingly detailed notes were accrued to be poured over by the Harcur and his advisers. The work would take an additional year before the first official theories left the drawing board and were put into practice.
The first of these was the reorganization of the kinship warbands raised by leaders of individual holds into proper, centrally controlled and organized regiments. The basic fighting unit from then-on would be the Sereg (Share-egg) and all other unit organization would be based around groupings of these units or as smaller component of them. A mandate was made for identical armies, the Dekaseregs, that would consist of ten seregs of the same disposition in order to make for easier logistics and increase overall strategic effectiveness. Seregs would serve as the primary unit of organization for all Almur troops (Limited to the Gospodars at the time but what would come to include Vaigayar and Talgayar Almur as well) while professional troops of Gurhim descent would serve in Yeneceri Brigades, a mix of traditional Beg Gurhim infantry and modern line-infantry regiments. The precedent was set that it would be the duties of the Dekaseregs to fight abroad while it was the ken of the Yeneceri to defend the heartland as befitting the qualities of the Almur and Dwarves respectively.
