The Berrandan Succession Crisis: Southern Front
Combatants: Sefti-Esharan Empire (cerdigon) vs Independence Coalition (NPCs)
Season: Spring 942 YP (First half of Turn 5)
Weather: South of the Jetma River, the Sefti Empire and its neighbors are enjoying a relatively pleasant Spring. Clouds and periodic showers prevent the region's denizens from considering it one of their best, but commanders on all sides agree that the weather is good for a campaign. No bonuses or penalties.

While in the North of the Sefti Empire the beast of War slowly awoke from its slumber, in the South it immediately leapt from its nest and struck the land with a fury. Of the four enemies Emperor Aeron had made when he announced his intention to subjugate Berranda and Loo-Can-Tee, three bordered his southernmost holdings.
At the outset of the war, the Emperor focused his southern forces on subjugating the core of his contested claim, Berranda proper. The army he assembled, the Esharan Army of the South under Marshal Rowan Blackmore, would have been more than enough to crush the standing army of Berranda when it had still been the seat of a co-Emperor. However, despite Aeron's public claims that the independence war was the plot of a corrupt minority, noble volunteers had joined the Berrandan army in droves, greatly bolstering it with trained cavalry. Combined with additional professional hires and mass conscription, the Ejercito del Rey Augusto de Berranda under Santiago Alejandro Matias Rodrigo de Berranda would present a challenge far more serious than the smaller, more complacent army of his predecessor. After a few initial skirmishes by vanguard forces, the two armies would test their strength in the Battle of the Berrandan Plains.
In the West, the Grand Army of the Crowned Republic of New Byrnis entered the province of Navaren. The Ducal Army of Navaren under Duke Agricola II - successor to the famed elven supporter of Aeron's rise to power - refused to engage the superior invasion force in pitched battle, instead stubbornly harassing it in a fighting retreat through the infamous hills of the region. As the Ducal Army trickled into Leoten, the segments behind did much to wear down their enemy's advance, though they suffered no small losses themselves. However, the newly-arriving garrison would just as soon find itself assailed by the First Fleet of the Crowned Republic of New Byrnis under Admiral Asla Kebidech.
The fleet, after effortlessly swatting away the paltry Middle Sea Squadron under Commodore Gevalian II, set to work reducing Leoten's defenses. It took only a few hours for the First Navy's officers to deduce and confirm that the city contained no batteries capable of challenging them, and from there they acted freely. With ships able to venture as close to the shore as they pleased, New Byrnian marines seized Leoten's docks by storm with overwhelming artillery support. No district lay too far for the navy's guns; any captain who saw military colors in their telescope was free to send a volley their way, forcing many Sefti units to lower their flags and avoid the city outskirts near the shore. The most heavy and concentrated fire, however, was directed at the city's walled barracks complex; here flew not only cannon-balls but a seemingly incessant rain of mortar-shells showering fire and shrapnel upon those within. By the time the Grand Army of New Byrnis chased the last segments of the Ducal Army from the hills to the city, conditions were already ideal for encirclement and assault. As the Siege of Leoten began in earnest, Duke Agricola II would have precious little time to organize his defense.
The third and final front of the Berrandan Succession War's Southern theater pitted Emperor Aeron Sefti against a foe to which he had neglected to direct any forces at all: Dog Crazzuz Pah-Ree-See of the Republic of Loo-Can-Tee. Of the combatants facing the great Seft-Esharan Empire, Loo-Can-Tee possessed the least in population and military assets. Yet, when forward elements of the Ar-mee of da Proud Loo-Cann-Tee-ans ventured North, they found no forces to oppose them except for a provincial garrison amounting to a single brigade. Soon waves of goblin cavalry followed by columns of infantry were pouring into the province under the Dog's personal command. The recently-installed Sefti nobles there, without time to consult the capital or bring in crown supplies, rushed to mobilize local militias to bolster the defense. Unfortunately for the defenders, their militias were more often than not encircled in the very towns and villages from which they were raised – mere companies and regiments isolated and attacked before they could properly consolidate. Provincial blockhouses and makeshift town defenses could only do so much to hold off the Loo-Can-Tee-ans, who had a decisive advantage not only in numbers, but in initiative. Within a mere two weeks, the province was overrun, the garrison had surrendered, and the remnants of the militia were pushed North into Hakin. A core Imperial province was now threatened by an invading army for the first time since the Northern Rebellion.
The goblins also set to work plying their age-old trade as sea raiders, with galiots and galleys disrupting the flow of commerce into the Middle Sea. They lacked the numbers to completely cut off the Sefti-Esharan Empire's sea routes. Nonetheless, the Good Ol' Boyz Fleet under Big Cap'n Groomee-o da Ram was certainly large enough to score one victory: defeating and capturing the remnants of the Middle Sea Squadron fleeing the New Byrnian fleet.
