May 24th, Year of the Prophet 940
Left Stone's Height yesterday. The trip across the Orclands was easy enough thanks to the Ironskull and their ferries. The Stonefoot Chieftains I talked to are all eager to see this expedition succeed - stands to reason, I suppose. If we do manage to establish a clear trade route to the West they'll be the ones to benefit the most. They told all the merchants to go easy on us, and we've stocked up on as many supplies as we can carry. I've taken Mograg's advice and am using mules for this expedition, Horses don't have the stamina for a long trip or the footing for mountain travel, and I don't want to take the time out of every day for wargs to hunt. For now we're heading due west until we hit the mountains, then the real work starts.
May 25th, Year of the Prophet 940
Clear skies, no difficulty travelling. Rogmar Sallowshot being an ass as usual.
May 26th
Good progress. Dust picking up on the horizon, I suspect we'll see a storm soon. Looking for a good place to hole up.
May 27th
No progress today. Storm came up on us about noon. There's not much shelter out here on the plains, but I had the men dig a retaining trench and pitch tents. We'll hunker down until it passes over. We've plenty of supplies yet, I'm not worried.
May 28th
Rogmar and Uthrak got into a fight over some stupid comment. I made them sit outside for half an hour; calmed them both right down. Rogmar even apologized - never thought I'd see the day. I'll have to try putting people outside in sandstorms more often.
May 29th
Storm's abated. We're pitching camp and moving on.
June 5th
We're reached the foothills of the Gzarak mountains. This is where our work really begins: finding a pass through them, or a route around them. Plenty of traders come through this way, but the routes they take can be pretty dangerous and unreliable. We're looking for something that can support real commerce between the Orclands and the West. I've mapped what I could and taken notes on potential routes travelers have taken. The first one is close by - I'll take Uthrak up tomorrow and see if we can find it. It doesn't sound promising, so I'm not expecting much, but due diligence and all that. Ogrik shot a stag; we'll eat well tonight.
June 6th As expected, the pass was useless. Uthrak and I spent have the day climbing to find it, and much of the route following a narrow granite ledge. It's far too thin for wagons or even horses. No go for anything but foot traffic. The next pass is a couple days north of here.

The Price of Conquest
The thousand sounds and smells of war filled the air of the Firetooth camp: The hammering of steel, the bark of wargs, the crack of rifles, the scent of oil and camp rations and freshly-dug latrines. The vast army camp spread out across the northern plains, an entire city of pitched tents and half-dug trenches that rivaled the size of the one they were besieging. Orcs from the five different Clans went about preparing for war, united in the minor indignities of war. There was a sense of bitter violence in the camp ready to snap at a moment's notice, like the twine of a string under pull, or perhaps a fireplace doused in oil just waiting for a match. It hovered and whispered like the early autumn winds that blew through, and there was no question of its direction. All that fervor, all that bloody and honor bent toward the city of Gusko's Rest.
"D'you think we'll... y'know..." Ergo Woodknife tilted his head at the city as he rested on his shovel, the moist dirt of the plains covering his clothing, mixing with sweat to make a thin, black paste of mud.
His companion shrugged and hefted a pile of dirt. "Not my problem. That's up to the Chiefs in their big tent."
"Yeah, but if you had to guess?"
"If I had to guess..." - Another shovel full of dirt flung through the air - "I'd say I'd rather get this over with instead of mucking around out here on the plains. It gets cold out here during the winter, and those giants have been said to be able to walk straight through a blizzard if it means killing someone. The Emperor's in that city; if we take it we could all go home tomorrow. That sounds a hell of a lot better to me than spending the next year or three and who knows how many battles before we win."
"I guess I hadn't thought about it that way."
"Of course you haven't." The older militia man stood up, resting his hands on his shovel. Instinctively he glanced over to make sure the Thane was nowhere around to critique his idleness. "Look Ergo, no offense but you're not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. Don't you have a pair of eyes? Look where we're digging - not out toward the plains, but in toward the gates. I'll bet my own ass this will end up being an embankment for the cannons. And the food? D'you think the Thane just hands out a side of ham because he feels generous? Or how about those Jaggedfist gladiators we ran into? Remember when they were down south? For Aed's sake use your head once in a while."
Ergo blinked momentarily. If Worth hadn't been a friend and companion he would have taken bloody offense to the insult. But Worth had taken him under his wing when Ergo got called up, taught him the finer tricks of combat, kept him alive during skirmishes, even taught him the... less savory aspects of campaigning. Familiarity and friendship allowed them to breach lines of etiquette that would usually end with a fist in someone's eye. "Yeah, I guess you're right. It'll be my first real fight though. Not a skirmish or ambush or anything, a real battle."
"You'll do fine. You're well trained, you come from a good House - your dad taught you well. Fight hard, remember what you've been taught, follow orders. Trust me, despite lacking some facilities you won't be the one to dishonor your family's name. If you do find yourself confused or doubting, just look at your gun - that's the same gun your dad used, and your grandfather, all the way up to that great-great-grand you were telling me about who used it to pike a boar. It's not just you fighting with that thing, it's your entire House."
Ergo nodded. He spotted the Thane walk by and immediately started shoveling again.
"Worth."
"What?"
"Thanks."

"Listen, and listen well." Artog bellowed to the assembled officers. There was great diversity here. The majority were Firetooth, young sons from the Great Houses here to live up to the legacy of their forefathers, or the heirs of others hoping to distinguish themselves on the field of battle. But many officers were Orclanders: Ironskull warriors dressed in skins and felt like the warg-riders of old, Stonefoot armored in archaic platemail or Jaggedfist with their great polearms and brutal scars. Five dozen or so stood assembled around the High Chief - the Battalion commanders of every unit in the army. Artog stood at their center, armed in fine plate and fur and silk armor. He struck an imposing figure despite his short height thanks to his solid stance and firm bearing. He knew how to demand respect through his actions.
"We have suffered much in the last day and night. Many of our men lie dead on the field of battle. I know that you are tired, and cold, and perhaps disheartened." None of them assented, but he could see it in their faces. They had fought brilliantly and done great damage to their enemy, but the numbers and ferocity of the combined Sacrye-Esharan army had caught them by surprise. Intellectually Artog knew the blow was nowhere near as bad as it felt; he had predicted they would be pushed back, prepared for it, even. As long as they held the fastness in the heart of Gusko's Rest they could not be dislodged, no matter what happened on the field. But knowing and feeling were two different things.
"But I want you to know this: We will win." He paused briefly. "We will win because we are Orcs. War runs in our veins! For centuries we were the scourge of Eshara; The terror that shook the halls of the Emperors. It was we who drove Survaek from the North. It was we who shattered the Kazan and their pathetic 'khan.' In our entire history, no invader has ever manged to conquer Orcish land. And neither will some upstart giants with no legacy!" Such soldiers as were able had assembled around the officers, straining to hear their High Chief speak.
"We will endure. We will fight. And we will win. Because that is who we are. I tell you, I truly believe that Aed has blessed our people with the courage and tenacity to overcome any task. He has formed us perfectly and set us to fulfill our potential. And as long as we remain firm in our cause and united in our goal, nothing will stand in our way.
"Now go! Assemble your men and relay your orders. Today we fight again. Remember that you are Orcs and bring glory to your House and Clan!"

Moderation Mark
The Firetooth Army had achieved the true heights of success. In the first year of the war, it had stormed through Southern Jaxtathrali , crossed the banks of the Johor River, and assaulted Gusko's Rest in a bloody but brilliant display of Orclander unity against the old giant foe. Yet the entry of the Holy Union into the war had tipped the war from assured victory into bloody stalemate. In two crushing back to back defeats first on the bloody Fields of Suvaneh and then through the burning streets of Gusko's Rest. Now two and a half years later, the Orclander Army found itself almost identically back at where it started on the southern bank of the Johor River. It was a much different army that had come swaggering into Jaxtathrali province, one that was bloodied, humiliated, and growing increasingly frustrated with its leadership that had seen so many lives lost. Much of the Orclander Army consisted of Firetooth militia, troops who had been expected to have fought for a year in the field, not three. While they remained at the front, fields went fallow and loved one's unattended all for the sacrifice of Greater Orcland. Thus, it was not a surprise when Orclander troops began deserting from the front. The reprisals were harsh, dozens were executed, oftentimes by firing squads drawn the ranks of their own company. Yet when an entire regiment refused its rotation to the front, it set off a crisis within the army. Mutiny was in the air and the overall unity of the Allied army was threatened. The Stonefoot blamed the Ironskull for the death of their Chief. The Jaggedfist thought the Firetooth '' too soft ''. Why should they fight for the Ironskull land when they had been too weak to hold it? The Ironskull blamed the other tribes for not committing enough resources for the offensive. On the Council of Eldars, the failures of the war (and the failure at the negotiating table) was generating another battle of wills between the Eldars. Only the elevation of Boarsplitter to that of a Martyr had kept the Stonefoot from withdrawing its forces and support for the war completely. Yet the Stonefoot were now advocating for a negotiated settlement, 'peace with honor'. Moreso, both the Jaggedfist and Stonefoot were now advocating for a change of leadership, the dismissal of Nortag Willowise, and the end of High Chief Artog Aedsword's role as overall commander of the Orclander forces. The Stonefoot, backed by the Jaggedfist, had submitted their own name for commander in chief. General Torug Iron Hand, a respected veteran commander that was popular among the troops but importantly one that had publicly called for an end to the war. The dismissal of Artog was something that was unthinkable and while the two Great Clans lacked the votes to force the Council's hand, it did not mean they would go quietly. The Eldar Council had arrived at an impasse, with the Stonefoot alongside the Jaggedfist declaring that they would continue to supply soldiers but ONLY for defensive operations to preserve the territory that the Orc's had already claimed. Furthermore, both the Jaggedfist and Stonefoot armies would not fall under High Chief Artog's direct command although would continue to cooperate in areas of defense when required. EFFECTS -- -1 Public Order from casualties. (will improve with victories or treaty) -- The Jaggedfist and Stonefoot Armies have withdrawn from High Chief Artog's command and will no longer participate in any offensive actions although they will continue to defend all conquered territory in the south of Jaxtathrali province. -- The Firetooth Army receives a moderate morale penalty for any offensive action launched within the next two turns. -- Accai Boarsplitter, heir of the Stonefoot, has withdrawn from the frontlines back to Stonefoot lands.

*BOOM*
The cannon roared to life, spitting fire and smoke. The ball smashed into the earthen bank built to contain it, releasing a cloud of dust. Gorth leaped forward as his companions wheeled the cannon back into position, swiftly jamming his swab down the barrel to extract the unspent powder and clean the barrel. In one quick motion he pulled out the swab and spun it around. Yortan, the loader, already has the powder bag and cannonball ready; Gorth shoved them down the barrel until they hit the back with a firm shove, then leaped back to the ready position. Fenror, the gunner, had his burning fuse ready the moment they cleared the firing line.
*BOOM*
Then he did it again.
*BOOM*
and again.
*BOOM*
The sweat poured down Gorth's face. Mixed with smoke and powder from the cannon, it stung painfully, but he had no time to wipe it away. His arms ached with exertion and his ears rang with every shot. Despite the freezing weather he felt too hot for his coat and longed to take it off. There was no time for that, only swabbing the barrel, loading the cannon.
*BOOM*
A thane stopped by his cannon, the next one down the line. Through his frantic loading and reloading Gorth watch him observe the crew, a stopwatch in one hand.
*BOOM*
The thane's finger flickered. He glanced down at the clockwork, nodded, and moved on.
*BOOM*
Ever since their defeat at Gusko's Rest the army had been drilling nonstop. Firing drills, marching drills, cleaning drills, hitching drills. But by far their largest obsession had been the artillery drills. Mountains of shot and ammunition had been brought in with the new cannons - shiny, standardized pieces with new, quick-hitching carriages and standardized dimensions. Every day the artillery men drilled with them, until the actions of loading and firing were instinct. Gorth and the rest of his crew could go from one round to the next in less than fifty seconds, and it seemed that the officers were determined to make them keep it up for hours on end, if need be.
*BOOM*
The grumbling was incessant, the work hard. But the defeat at Gusko's Rest still haunted everyone's mind. Next time, they would have the training and equipment to defeat the giants. And more than anything else, that meant having the artillery. Muskets were less effective against the giant's thick skin, and were outranged by their enormous hand-cannons. But artillery had the range and firepower to shatter giant formations. So they drilled. Every day. Complaints were drowned out when the officers revealed rewards of extra rations and perks for those who did well: days of leave, slices of bacon and pieces of fresh fruit, extra pay and commendations. Now everyone trained in one mind. Even the other Clans had bought in, to an extent, and were holding their own drills.
*BOOM*

Sacye Giants Outlawed Aedak, Practice Slavery"They took my son" - Greka RedhairAn Exclusive Interview*It was a bitter winter morning when, according to Greka Redhair, the Sacrye arrived at the door of their humble homestead. "They often came by, in those days." Greka, an Ironskull Orc recently liberated from the Sacrye by Orcland forces, related. "Usually it was to collect taxes, or because of complaints from our neighbors. But that day was different." According to Greka, Sacrye guardsmen would routinely harass Orcish citizens, demanding increased taxes and launching snap inspections for "heretical" (The Sacrye term for anything Aedak) materials. Usually these inspections ended after a bribe was paid. This particular encounter, however, would be different. "I could tell they had a reason to come the moment I saw them." Greka explained. "Usually they just sort of loitered around, poking at things and asking questions. That day they did none of that. They came right up and asked where my son was." Greka's son, a ten-year-old boy by the name of Horgoth, was out helping his father farm.... (Continued on Page 2)
