Comalto is the first ogre mage, and was elevated into leadership by his people upon being heralded for his return from his pilgrimage with Fueje. Despite the simple mindedness of his race, Comalto is curious and innovative, but wary. Threatened by starvation and extinction in his childhood, and losing his mentor Fueje left scars on the hopeful young ogre. His nature and experiences have tempered him into a solemn leader with an undaunted appetite.

History
Caudierra, as it is known by the ogres that inhabit it, came from the unification of a number of the small ogre tribes in the region. Before Caudierra and Comuchtitlán came into being, the tribes were spread out and relatively isolated. These ogre tribes were almost exclusively raider societies, and over time, they had overhunted their territories almost to exhaustion in ravenous fits. The already modest populations of the tribes begin to dwindle from starvation, and various acts of self-preservation stalled what seemed like inevitable extinction. Some tribes formed alliances, others became mad cannibals, and some even ventured beyond their lands. One of these tribes, known as the Calcimatas (Bonekillers) in their tongue, traveled south to find new land. One of their scouts, Fueje, happened upon Luturnian farmland and found the key to his race’s salvation. Instead of outright attacking the farms for their food, Fueje realized that these people had food that could be made to come out of the ground.
Fueje came back to the Calcimatas with his story, and his tribe attempted to learn to farm. Months went by with nothing to show for their efforts, and many began to turn on Comalto, seeing him as a fool who’d killed himself and his people by distracting them with false promises. The tribe would have torn itself to pieces had their crops not began to grow before their very eyes, at the feet of one of their young. This ogreling, Comalto, was the first mage of the ogres. Some of them said Comalto’s power came from their agonizing hunger, others say it came from their will to live. To this day, none can tell why the miracle happened, but it allowed the ogres to live. Comalto could make the planted seeds sprout, and their tribe would go on. With Comalto’s magic able to feed the ogres until their first natural crop could be harvested, the Calcimatas didn’t just survive, they prospered. Other tribes, jealous of the Calcimatas, soon began to attack them for their bounty of food. Pressed to defend themselves, the Calcimatas growth stagnated under the constant threat of starving raiders. After ten years had passed, Fueje came before the tribe and asked to take Comalto (whom had since come of age) to the other tribes, to share the gift of farming that they had discovered. Comalto had come up with the idea, after his tribe’s numbers grew and a very small number of other shamans had been born. The tribe celebrated their heroes, and sent them on their journey to quell the raids; taking bags of seeds for their quest, Fueje and Comalto set off to what would be the beginning of unity for the ogres.
At first, the other tribes would not allow Fueje and Comalto to approach. Undaunted in their duty to their own tribe, Fueje took Comalto to create farms for the ogres they came across. Many of the ogres were won over easily by the proposition of not starving to death, and some even swore their lives to Fueje and Comalto. Some of these latter tribes moved their people to the land of the Calcimatas, and Comuchtitlán (city of much food) began to form, tribal identity forsaken by the Calcimatas and the newcomers. But Fueje and Comalto continued to travel further north, where the cannibal tribes lived. These were the ogres that had hunted each other instead of migrating, and very little was left in the region. When Fueje and Comalto arrived, they immediately became targets. Unlike the cannibals, Fueje and Comalto had enough to eat, and would have been much better meals than the local ogres. Had Comalto not insisted they try, Fueje would have ended their journey there. But Comalto tried desperately to save the cannibals, and planted farms for them. He soon saw why his goals were impossible when the cannibal ogres fought and ate each other to control the farm. Comalto had seen enough, and relented to Fueje. On their way home, Fueje stopped Comalto, realizing they were being followed. Several cannibals sprang from the surroundings, and Fueje fought them off alone, telling Comalto to return. When he arrived in Comuchtitlán for the first time, Comalto was alone.
