The news of Tanglemane's defeat at the hands of the Ikegami spread across the region like wildfire. While the Great Huntsman himself had escaped with much of his army intact, the Ikegami victory had proved the futility of trying to resist the mass invasion. The Mercenary King and his army did not even bother marching back to Rowanhold to regroup or prepare a defense: They simply disappeared into the vast forests and steppe of their country.
There was no point in fighting to the end for soldiers pledged to a brigand and a kingdom with no history. Within days, the so-called Free Sylph Kingdom of Siercia was no more. Rowanhold was sacked and razed by its own mercenary garrison, joined by thousands of opportunists among the militia, before either the Commonwealth or its allies could arrive to lay siege. They found only a shell of a city, and not even many refugees; such recent settlers apparently had no trouble going back to their old lives in the woods and the plains, or perhaps they preferred it to whatever they expected from the infamous King Aeron.
South of the destroyed capital, the sylphan villages had no choice but to bow before a new master, King Aeron Sefti. North of it, however, the settlements had more choices. Beset by the dwarven general Stone Wall Jackson's army, the woodsfolk of the village of Insch (Wood Village) pledged their loyalty to King Abbetine of the Thrum. The two farming villages further North preferred to defect to the Gurd Magocracy, whose spellcasters brought powerful signs as well as healing with them. And to the West, the Ikegami elves still occupied the gold mines.
In the course of less than a year, from Spring into early Autumn, Tanglemane's War had ended in a victory for the allies in which all shared in the spoil. Yet, with the capital burned down and less than half the villages expected in his hands, King Aeron had reasons to find the campaign a disappointment. The swift victory of this war may have simply drawn the battle-lines for a much more terrible one in the future.
