It was on the Western Bank of the Ryn river, near to the easternmost Kazan village, that the army of Veikan Dirgeheart was caught by the host of the Kazan. The immense horde of human riders and their handful of foot regiments had spread themselves thin hunting for the armies of the Firetooth and their Wastelander allies and had succeeded in finding Dirgeheart's throng. It was the scouting wargriders that first spotted the incoming host though soon enough the dust cloud kicked up could be spotted by any soldier with adequate vision.
It was in this moment before the crash that both commanders had to make a choice; clear enough were the facts that the infantry support of the Kazan could not possibly keep up with the riders if a lightning attack was preferred whilst the Firetooth could clearly see that, if pressed, the Kazan could close the distance rapidly to their position. With the Ryn rushing behind them the Firetooth were pressed up to a wall of water and a host of ferocious steppe-warriors with only their commander's guile to offer salvation from the seemingly numerically superior foe.
SUMMARY -- Veikan Dirgeheart's army is caught marching down the Ryn by the Grand Horde of the Kazan. -- The distance between the two armies is great enough to make an infantry rush impossible but allows for a lightning strike by Kazan cavalry if desired. -- The Ryn remains seemingly calm but deceptively deep in places, making a retreat across it possible but not without risks.

The first battle of the Orcish Invasion of Kazan was one not of great blows struck and heroic duels but a grueling, bottled up conflict behind barriers as the orcish host gets caught between a rock and a hard place. To their credit, upon receiving the order to form a semi-circle around the wagon train the orcish troops performed admirably. Just in the nick of time the host was able to assemble its makeshift defenses as the hordes of the Kazan cavalry were upon them, loosing a storm of arrows as a wave of metal, wood, and feathers that came down in seemingly endless streams of death. The Orcish warriors hunkered down as the hail of arrows continued to fall as the Kazan horde was given momentary control of the battlefield, free to maneuver into positions most beneficial to their intended violence.
From behind the barricades of wagons the Orcish line hunkered down into tight formation, able to hide from the arrows decently enough but with their tightly packed formation risking serious threat if focused barrages came into play as the Kazans ended their careful skirmishing and moved to true engagements. Behind the line the detachment of riders attempted to ford the river, testing it for possible risk while their brethren sold their lives dearly for every second.
As the storm of arrows slowly began to subside the orcish frontlines were swiftly met with a massed tide of gibbering fanatics, howling in their Southern tongue praises to Aed as they bore down on their Aedakom brothers with the same fervor directed towards Pagans. The initial clash of blades was nearly nonexistent as massed gunfire from the tight formation slaughtered the frontlines of the religious Zealots whom, as per their ilk, continued on completely unfazed. Pike met blade as the Zealots locked the very outskirts of the walls in combat, clambering over carts where they could and attempting to tip them when the orcish palisades proved too harrowing to climb. By all rights the Orcs seemed positively trapped and in incredibly danger as the noose of the Khan wrapped tightly around their throat.
Notes (Known to both participants) -- The Orcish army has successfully produced workable cover in the form of their supply wagons but now remains in tight formation with their backs to the river. -- The Kazan Khanate's skirmishing tactics provide the perfect screen for Kazan troops to move into formation as orcs keep their heads down. -- Initial fighting between Zealots and Orcish troops on the edges of their hastily crafted fortification remain tenuous with Zealots unable to make meaningful gains but completely unfazed by any losses suffered so far. -- Several dozen orcs can be seen attempted to ford the river, their success unverifiable from the distance.

In what would go down in the sagas of the age, told by the bards of the Firetooth in every hall and by every hearth, the Firetooth forces under Veikan Dirgeheart successfully escaped the grasping talons of the Kazan army. The host, numerous in size and scope, was held up by its own fanatical zealot troops who clambered over the defenses and blocked ability to fire into the Firetooth ranks effectively without risking harm to their own troops. When the wagons were set alight all hell broke loose as the Zealots were found on the wrong side of the flames, now trapped against the burning carts and the pikes and blades of the Firetooth.
Like heroes of old the Firetooth melee warriors held the line with pike and shield and sword, hacking away at their foes in a vicious melee as the zealots refused to give in and enemy cavalry rode around the defensive line, hunting for an opening wherever there might be. All the while Firetooth infantry poor across the river, fording through the tight path that had been discovered by the wargriders through the rushing water in relative safety. Out of sheer luck the number that cross greatly outnumbered those that got swept down river and even those seemed to be gently placed on the opposite side simply a good walk away from their brethren.
It was the shield-bearing infantry of the Firetooth that were the last to cross, many falling to the enemy as they fought their way back harried by the oncoming zealots. As soon as the last of them had reached the safety of the bank their firearm and bow armed troops opened fire on the Zealots, volley after volley of withering fire tearing the fanatics apart and turning the river red with blood. It had been a hard fought victory but the Firetooth and Veikan Dirgeheart had been successful in their flight.
SUMMARY -- Veikan Dirgeheart's army has successfully escaped the forces of the Khan, fleeing across a narrow ford to the opposite bank. -- Heavy casualties are suffered by the Khan's infantry forces that had attacked the blockade while their cavalry forces remain unharmed. -- Game village successfully saved from Veikan's army at large sacrifice of Kazan lives.
