King Enann sat at the head of the short table, slowly reading over the missive he had just been handed. Four other chairs flanked him on either side, making up the totality of the king's inner council. Currently, only two of these chairs were occupied. To the king's right sat Elder Zwerkir Rennigin Lightbringer, high priest of Ontaré, and to his left sat Sir Paxar Oathsworn, chief knight of Ontaré's forces. They waited patiently as their sovereign finished reading, and rolled the parchment back. "It seems that trouble can't wait to begin." He said with a smirk, leaning back in his seat. "The Kingdom of Elon has gone and trod on the toes of Karmozijn Kerk. They ask for assistance through diplomacy, or show of force."
Paxar smirked himself, "Those are the usual options aren't they?" Rennigin spoke up, "Surely, we can't be thinking of sending soldiers. That would just escalate the situation would it not?" Enann nodded, "We don't have the men to spare at any rate. Pax, I need you to work on that." Paxar nodded respectfully. "The problem is..." Enann went on. "...that we don't even have a diplomatic basis to begin with in Elon. It would be quite rude to introduce ourselves and tell them to get out in the same breath."
This time it was Rennigin's turn to nod. "I do believe." The high priest said quietly. "That their state religion is not far removed from orthodoxy. That gives us common ground at least."
The conversation was interrupted briefly by a well-dressed messenger who spoke quickly and quietly to the king. As he hears the news, Enann's face cracks into a wide smile, and he tries to contain a hearty laugh. "It seems we have a bit of luck my friends." He says, slapping the table with an open hand. "It seems we have a visitor at our gates, an emissary from Elon. I will meet with her and see what we can make of this business. In the meantime, Pax, we need to improve our defenses, make us a proper kingdom. Ren, we need to expand. I need you to encourage our people to settle the surrounding areas, spread out into the forest and gather its resources. Aed placed us here for this purpose, and we need to see it through." Both men nodded and stood from the table. Enann called for a messenger, giving him a sealed note to be delivered to the Elonese envoy.
