As the sun rose above the hills to the front of the riders, light could be seen shining through the branches of the trees that freckled the hilltops. Like every morning, Duque Augusto Francisco el Segundo rode his favorite horse, Alfonso. Alfonso was a light brown stallion, his brown hair was contrasted by his dark black mane, and his equally dark tail. Following the death of his first war horse, the Duque selected Alfonso when he was just a foal. He was trained by the best trainers in the land, and broken in by the Duque. The Duque and the horse took to one another instantly, forging a bond that had lasted over 20 years. Alfonso, now too old to ride in battle, was ridden each morning by the Duque. This morning was no different, other than that the Duque was unable to take in the beauties of his lands, for he was inconvenienced by the duties of governance:
The Duque rode on the outskirts of the Duchy's capital, Berranda. With him rode two of his royal advisors, Conde Domingo Palomo de Berja, and Conde Leon Valdez de Cerbon.
"Your royal highness, I see no way in which this could cause harm. An alliance, at the very least, with the Loo-Can-Tee will secure our East, and cause us no harm." spoke Conde Domingo Palomo de Berja, El consejero de plomo de Berranda, the head chancellor of Berranda, who has been a friend of the August Duke since childhood. "Allow me to travel to Lucente, sir."
The party continued to ride, as the Duke thought to himself, the benefits of securing an ally to his East were abundant, and there was no real downside. The Loo-Can-Tee goblins arrived in Lucente generations earlier. House Rodrigo, the ruling house of the Duchy of Berranda, were always on good terms with the Loo-Can-Tee. At the time of the Loo-Can-Tee's arrival in the Crowned Republic of Lucente, the Rodrigo family was the only great family in the realm practicing Aedak. Relations between the Loo-Can-Tee and the August Duchy of Berranda had always been cordial due, in no small part, to their religious ties. To the August Duke their practicing of Orthodox Aedak was the most important piece of the puzzle.
"We are inclined to agree, my friend. Except, I believe we should seek to vassalize our Easterly neighbors. What do you think Leon?" spoke Francisco el Segundo.
Leon Valdez de Cerbon, was the eldest son of the late Conde Juan Valdez de Cerbon, even still he was barely past the age of twenty-three. He served as the representative of the Asesor de Militar, the realm's military adviser. He was chosen to serve as the representative of the Asesor de Militar, as military action was not likely to be used, and the Asesor believed the young noble should sit in his place, and learn the nuances of governance.
"I-Sorry, Your highness?" He spoke nervously, he had met the August Duke before, though it had only been for a moment in a room filled with members of the Berrandan court.
"Your thoughts on the matter, lad? Does the Asesor de Militar believe the Loo-Can-Tee will be receptive to diplomacy as far as an alliance is concerned?" The August Duke had gotten this reaction from many young noblemen over the years.
"Yes, your highness. The Asesor de Militar is in agreement with the chancellor, your highness." He spoke as the group continued to ride toward the hill.
"Excellent, then it is settled. Domingo, on the morrow you will ride along with a contingent of twenty-guardsmen. Why don't you take Conde Valdez, with you as well? It will be a good learning experience for him." said the August Duke, a decision quickly made that will have a huge impact on the future of the Duchy, though they would have to wait to find out exactly what it might be.
