History of the August Duchy of Berranda:
Pre-Invasion of the North (Date Unknown):
It all began with a single great family, the Rodrigo family, in the Crowned Republic of Lucente. The Crowned Republic of Lucente was a free state in the South East of the Northern Continent. The Crowned Republic of Lucente was ruled by the Crowned Doge who was a member of one of the great families of Lucente, elected by the great families of Lucente to rule them. The Crowned Republic of Lucente placed great value on few things, among them were trade, and their military. As such, they placed almost no value on religion within their Republic, allowing the families and the commoners to practice whichever religion they chose peacefully, however most great families, and commoners believed in Idrico, the Lucentian god of the sea, among those few who did not were the Rodrigo Family. During a merchant trip to the South, the patriarch of the Rodrigo family, became enthralled with Aed. He spent much of the visit meeting with Vaekirate priests, learning the ways of the Aedak religion. Before leaving, he converted to Aedak. Upon his return his manor outside the city of Lucente, he converted his family, and all of his subjects to the religion. The Rodrigo family were zealous in their belief in Aed, and spent much time worshipping, many family members stepped away from a life of being a merchant, and instead to a life in the Lucentian Freikorps, a mercenary unit that was permanantly hired by the Lucentians composed solely of Lucentians. The Rodrigo family members viewed this as a way to spread their religion to other Lucentians, and Northern pagans. Other Lucentian families looked upon them as outsiders, a family who no longer wished to improve the Republic by trading, and increasing the size of the Lucente economy, but as religious zealots. This, however, did not see them decline in power, as the other great families knew that the Rodrigos possessed a vast amount of wealth and power within the Republic. The tolerance of the Crowned Republic of Lucente proved to be a major part of it's downfall, as over a period of time a large number of goblin refugees moved into the Republic. As time passed, the goblins believed themselves to be Lucentians, even referring to themselves as "Loo-Can-Tee". The humans that composed the Republic, slowly moved away. Among them the Rodrigo family, led by Gerardo Rodrigo, and their subjects dispersed from the Republic. Most of whom went westward and settled along the river, which overtime came to be known as Rio Camino Caida. Over generations the Lucentians mixed with the local populace. Through this their customs, and culture saw changes take place. The former-Lucentians became a new culture in and of themselves. They valued honor, dignity, and duty. Much of which was influenced by their deep beliefs in Aed. The Rodrigo family became the head of the settlement, which grew over time and came to be known known as the the Duqado Augusto de Berranda.
The Great Conquest (772-777 YP):
In 772, the Year of the Prophet, the Survaek Empire invaded the Northern Continent with the Vaekirate to spread the Aedak religion to the Northern pagans. Among the few places in the North already practice Aedak was the August Duchy of Berranda. The Duchy had traded greatly with the South already, and it was expected for all heirs apparent to the title of Duque Augusto to make a pilgrimage to Messara. As such the Vaekirate and the Duqado Augusto had already forged a long lasting relationship. Prior to the invasion, the Vaekir summoned Duque Augusto Alejandro Pascual Guillermo Rodrigo de Berranda el Primero to visit Messara. During this visit, the Duque Augusto was informed that the Vaekir had raised an army, along with the Survaek Empire. The Vaekir explained the purpose for this army: To defeat the heretical Empire of Eshara. The Vaekir expressed the desire to use Berranda as a staging point for the Eastern campaign. As expected, the zealous Duque Augusto offered his lands for the Vaekir to use, and further offered the service of his personal retinue of 300 Household Knights, to be commanded by the Duque Augusto himself in the campaign. His offer was swiftly accepted by the Vaekirate. Before returning to Berranda, the unmarried Duque sought to marry the daughter of a Messaran noble, he achieved this with the aid of the Vaekir himself. He returned to Berranda several months later with the Tovenaar-Akur Legate along with the Vaekir Army. The Duque Augusto along with his 300 knights, the Tovenaar-Akur Legate, and the Vaekir Army set out upon their conquest of the Eastern portion of the Northern continent. The Duque Augusto earned himself distinction within the army at the Battle of the Jetma during a cavalry charge. He and his knights routed the right flank of the Esharan army inflicting many casualties upon the enemies. The Duque Augusto himself was engaged in the action, having been dismounted by an enemy infantryman, he continued to fight and singlehandedly inflicted serious casualties upon the enemy, before being wounded. He remained on the field until the engagement was finished, at which point he received attention from a Tovenaar. This action earned him the respect of the Vaekir, the Tovenaar-Akur Legate, the Vaekirate army, and the populace of Berranda. Following the victory of the Survaek Empire, and the Vaekirate the Duqado Augusto returned to his lands, where he was given complete and uncontested dominion over his lands in the name of the Survaek Empire, and the Vaekirate. The August Duchy of Berranda became a vassal of the Empire through the signing of the Northern Contract. The Duque Augusto received a coronation, with the Emperor's and the Vaekirate's blessing, at the New Byrnis capital.
Inter-war Period (777-823 YP):
In the years between the Great Conquest and the Fifteen Years' War, the Duqado Augusto de Berranda saw the ascension of a new Duque. Duque Augusto Francisco Ybarra Suero Rodrigo de Berranda el Segundo. Following the Great Conquest, the Survaek Empire installed a Surv-Akur Garrison at a newly constructed Imperial Fort on the Nerja peninsula. This fort served as a base for the Imperials in the South East of the Northern continent. The Surv-Akur garrison acted as a defense force for the area, keeping both pirates, and bandits in check. The Garrison worked in conjunction with the Ejército-Berrandan, the Duchy's professional army. Trade with the South, and other kingdoms on the Northern continent expanded, under the leadership of Duque Augusto Francisco. While the territory, and borders of the Duqado did not expand, the duchy's position within the realm was strengthened through military reforms known as the Reforma de Ejercito Modelo. This reform targeted both the supplying of, and the training of the duchy's professional army. The logistics to maintain the professional army prior to the reformation had stunted the growth within the army. The reformation of the army cleared much of the problems away, as well as ensuring that the cavalry within the army was the pride of the Berrandan people. As things between the Vaekir and the Survaek Empire turned sour, the newly crowned Duque Augusto de Berranda traveled to Messara with his wife on her first pilgrimage to the holy city. Whilst the Duquesa worshipped with the Vaekirate priests, the Duque had a private audience with the Vaekir. The Duque pleged his political support for the Vaekirate, and even more, military support if necessary. The purpose of this meeting remained a secret to all, bar the Vaekir and the Duque, a fact which would prove to be to their benefit in the future.
Fifteen Years' War (823-841 YP):
As the Fifteen Years' War broke out the Surv-Akur General, commanding the garrison on the Nerja peninsula, requested that Duque Augusto Francisco Ybarra Suero Rodrigo de Berranda el Segundo raise an additional seven thousand troops to augment his three thousand man garrison. The Duque obliged, and raised the requested number of men. They marched over a day before making camp for the night. It was here that the Duque informed his vassals and commanders what he intended to do: Swear for the Vaekirate. It was a decision he had made many months before, but none could question his devotion to the Vaekir, the commanders of the army would stand by their Duque. The Duque continued to explain that he intended to attack the Surv-Akur garrison on the field. They would march to the staging area, outriders would ride at the front of the army with the intention of being spotted with the Berrandan banners flying, including the personal banners of Duque Augusto Francisco Rodrigo. After they were spotted, they would return to the army which would advanced arrayed in battle formation. The battle that would ensue would be quick, and brutal. The Duque Augusto issued orders that no prisoners were to be harmed, and retreating enemies were not to be ridden down, but that they were to be allowed to retreat. The right wing of the army formed between the enemy and their point of retreat, the fort. This had left the enemy one route of retreat, out of Berranda and directly to Lucente. The sound of drums and horns blew as the advance units of the army advanced on the enemy, they were taken completely by surprise and the defense they were able to organize was far from sufficient to stop the onslaught. The opening minutes of the battle saw many men in the Surv-Akur army fall. Duque Augusto Francisco el Segundo lead his household knights in a cavalry charge at the outset of the batte, he recieved a wound over his right eye from a Surv-Akur pikeman, this wound did not stop the charge of the noble cavalry, as they cut through the unprepared Surv-Akur ranks, it was not long before the Surv-Akur army realized the battle had been lost, left with only one option, the Surv-Akur general ordered a retreat toward Lucente. Duque Augusto Francisco's army did not give chase, instead the army began marching toward what would become a nine week siege of the fort. The Surv-Akur defenders surrendered the fort, Francisco allowed the defenders safe passage through their territory and to Lucente. The Duque Augusto knew that the fort had to be destroyed for if it were to fall again into the hands of the Surv-Akur it would be the undoing of the Duqado de Berrando. His forces sacked the fort, and returned to the capital. The next years in the war were rough, the Survaek fleet achieved naval supremacy in just weeks, the Southern coast of the Duqado de Berranda. The Survaek fleet pounded military installations throughout the early part of the war, preventing the Duchy of Berranda from doing much. Many skirmishes were fought throughout the land, with varying levels of success for the August Duchy. It wasn't until the rebellion in the South, that allowed the Duque Augusto de Berranda to re-establish security over his realm. The Ejército-Berrandan rebuilt the fort with the materials that they had on hand, and stationed a garrison there to defend from a Survaek invasion, one that never came.
