The church had moved in more swiftly than Azlyn had expected. Millitary camps had already been set up around Kier's Climb by the time he arived and he recognized Haakon Titanhand's banners. He riden with Haakon in the holy war against the dwarves years ago and had learned a lot from the mage general. Azlyn still considered Haakon a trusted friend and something of mentor, despite the passage of time.
Azlyn rushed out to Hessnya in a passionate decision to do his best to rescue Casomir from his own choices and through a show of support and good faith lead his friend to see reason and seek a diplomatic refuge out of the destruction reigning down upon him and all of Hessnya. He saw it not only as an attempt to save a country and fellow sovereign of war and destruction but as hopefully a means to saving Casomir's soul. Religion was hard to swallow when it was forced down your throat by a distant Vaekir holding a death sentence in his other hand, but Azlyn had hopped that a friend presenting Aedkom with genuine respect and face to face honesty would help Casomir to see the truth. He still hoped for this, but averting war and political annihilation for King Casomir was seeming less and less likely now that the Empire had joined the church and disowning Casomir as a heretic and moving rapidly in war against him.
It made Alzyn feel tired and heavy, as he sat on his horse in the law light of evening, considering the camp surrounding Casomir and his castle. He could follow the instructions of the Hessnyan smugglers and attempt to enter the keep without Haakon's men detecting him, but to do so heckled at Azlyn's sense of honor and righteousness, not to mention it would be a form of betrayal against his friend Haakon Titanhand. Surely Haakon would understand Azlyn's purpose and would let give him permission to enter the keep as a diplomatic envoy.
Shaking the dust of the road and his weariness off for the time being, Azlyn kicked his horse Rasselas into a brisk trot and road out to the sheltering shadows of the hills down toward and Veakirate camp. When the guards hailed him and order him to halt, Azlyn gave them his name and title and asked them to relay his presence to Haakon Titanhand.
