Upon hearing of the Commonwealth's declaration of war, Ikegami Naozumi sent out messengers to the various mercenary companies of the North to send representatives to Kegosu to talk about hiring them for potential work.
--Messages are sent to every land-based mercenary company in the North.

Work was scarce for mercenaries these days despite the renewed conflicts in the North, and a summon from the Protector of the North made the offer virtually impossible to ignore for many mercenary captains in the region.
Some came largely out of respect for Lord Naozumi's reputation and honor: Lord Valus Mallorion Felto Ganior of the Dragons of Gullion, Brother-Captain Allern of the Brotherhood of Starfall, and D’Artagnan Melio of the experienced Musketeers. Others came more out of desperation for good-paying work: Ziggy the Jagg of the Longsticks, Bernard Calliway of the Blowhards, and Thungri Blackhammer of the Mountain Hunters. Notably absent was Gorfang Blacktooth.

Naozumi had arranged a room at the palace for the purpose of the meeting, Naozumi had provided food and drink for each of them as was customary for guests and only respectable. Naozumi waited patiently as each filed in and took a seat at one end of the table , idly noting who had come and who had not.
"Thank you for answering my summons, as you all likely know, the Commonwealth has declared war on the Jotun Clans, despite the armistice signed, as co-king of Navaren, Aeron is bound by the oath Pedro made and is thusly at fault for breaking the armistice before the year was over."
Naozumi looked over each of the mercenary captains for a moment before continuing.
"No matter, I signed a treaty with the Jotun and I intend to honor it, I will not have it said of me that I abandoned my ally in his time of need. I would hire each of your companies to aid in the coming conflicts this autumn when we move. For each of you I would offer a 4,000 jian hiring fee with 5,000 jian a season afterwards. Is this reasonable to you?"

Lord Valus rose from his seat and bowed before the daimyo, startling some of the other mercenary captains.
"Lord Ikegami Naozumi," he announced, "you are my brother in kin, and my superior in honor. I will fight for a three-thousand jiien hiring fee and three-thousand jiien per season thereafter."
There was a brief awkward silence, interrupted by a throat-clearing from D'Artagnan Melio. "Your honorable reputation goes before you indeed, Lord Ikegami. For the sake of my men, I cannot offer the generous terms of my noble elven comrade, but I gladly accept the offer you yourself put forth."
The musketeer's words seemed to put the rest of the assembled captains at ease. "Aye, your price is fair and I accept," added Brother-Captain Allern.
The others, however, were not about let this meeting go by without at least a little haggling.
"Weez 'ad a whole year wid'out no jobz or pay," explained Ziggy the Jag. "We ain't cha-jin inna battle widda faefolk justa 'av our pockets empty next year! Eight-thousand jee-yen upfront, then six-thousand a season!"
Thungri Blackhammer nodded in agreement. "The goblin speaks true, for once. My boys' bellies are aching for good food. Ten-thousand jiien, for the sake of a poor dwarf captain and his poor soldiers."
"Aye aye!" agreed Bernard Calliway. "Same for me and my boys, your lordship. A man's gotta eat! And for more than just a month or two at a time!"

Expensive but he could afford it, and Naozumi would need all the power he could muster if it came to war.
"All acceptable terms, I thank each of you for coming and please take full advantage of the amenities provided before mustering your companies."
