After the battle for Thundercrown the jotun made camp for several days. One Evening he invited both Haakon and Lagertha to dine with him as well as Wulfric Thunderfirst. A roast boar was on offer with roated vegetables and buttered squash. And unlike the previous dinner they'd shared, the mead flowed freely. All throughout the camp it was the same. Great casks of mead had been broken out of stores and given to the remaining men after the battle. Gudrik Raised his horn to Lagertha after they'd had some time to eat.
"How did you find your first battle? Everything you thought it would be?" He grin was wide as he turned to her father. "Congratulations seem in order. Your daughter won he first duel and then you slay the War-chief in single combat."

"It was not as exciting as father made it out to be," Lagertha cooed as she turned to grin at her father before turning back to finish her response, "But I did enjoy it."
"Aye! I heard my girl taught the fool a lesson! A proud thing, I think. And the War-Chief, despite his bared teeth, fell like any of the other orcs. A good fight though. You all held yourself well this day as well! It was good to fight beside my kin once more."

"I thank you for your kind words. I was happy to tie up a lose end from my expedition to the wastes. Though I'm particularly pleased with the performance of our musketeers." He took a long pull from his horn. "Though in truth I'd like hear your impressions of our performance." He was looking at Lagertha, his question had been ambiguous intentionally. Whether it was her view of his troops or himself she would have his rapt attention.

"I found my kin's . . . " Lagertha stopped, throwing a sidelong glance to the Blood dancer, "More than acceptable."
"She speaks with humble tone!" quickly bellowed Haakon, grinning viciously, "She couldn't hold herself back from excitement after the battle! Now girl, you have something to say! Say it!"
Lagertha frowned a moment, looking at her father with a sullen, displeased reaction to his outburst before simply stating what he was so prodding her for.
"I give my acceptance to the union, if you would still have it."

"I would have you to wife if I had to bundle you aboard my Dragonships in the dead of night." Gudrik's grin a little mead soaked. "You are lovely, intelligent and a skilled warrior. Aed has blessed me more than i have right to be." He rubbed absently at the tree tattoo on his arm. "Well I'm sure my brother will wish to make this an ungodly extravagant affair so I will send him word on the morrow."

Gudrik came home after a long hunting trip with his brother. He decided to visit his wife in her study at the college. He would tumble into a couch to one side of her desk. "You know love, those men in funny hats across the sea really know how to stir up trouble."

"Those men in funny hats across the sea are far more than just that," echoed Lagertha in response to Gudrik's statement, turning to look at him with a disgruntled mask of displeasure borne of one highly religious having her beliefs and religious authorities being misrepresented.
"Besides, it was hardly they who stirred up trouble. His Holiness gave a perfectly reasonable demand to the Northern Lords that Casomir did not live up to, as is his sworn Duty. And then rather than face his punishment, as lenient as it was, he decided to cower and curse the name of the Southerners who provided so much good for his people. That is not the mark of a good King, husband."

"They're all just men in funny hats. The Vaekir has a funny hat, the chief priest has a funny hat, even the Emperor has one." He grinned at his wife to show he meant no lasting harm. "And i wasn't referring to that business in Hessnya. Casomir is a fool who's built his own gallows and a grave beside it. I'm referring to the meeting of Thanes that was held in the middle of our hunt. There's a big ruckus about how we should respond to the declarations by the Vaekir and Emperor regarding the northern contract. And that my dear is the very definition of two men in funny hats causing trouble."
He shifted slightly to face her better. "Some of the Thanes say if half of the southerners leadership says their own god doesn't support their rule here we should drive the lot of you back into the sea and go back to the old ways. They're fools, but i can't blame them. We only converted because we were conquered. There are more than a few who feel if Aed's Mouth says his Sword doesn't have a right to rule us, than neither does Aed." He looked at his hands. "It must be hard for them, being forced to renounce the god's their fathers preyed to. It was different for me, I was raised Aedekom since I was born after the conquest and they sent priests to my father to make sure he and my brother learned the books. So I can understand that line of thinking. But it wont get us anywhere but where Casomir is now."

"Hmph. Perhaps you are right there," she relented, noticing her sharp tone and doing her best to dial it back, "Though it pleases me to see you so wisely considering things. It seems having all the books at the college has somehow aided in your own understanding of the world; a marvel." This time she showed a smile, showing her own lack of lasting harm.
"It seems, however, that these fools have not received that knowledge as you have. They simply do not understand what the Raegarnam preaches; rules for the Emperor and Vaekir to rule by. Their foolish obsession with their false idols has no place in a modern world. The decree by Chief Priest Staas was claiming that there was no theological basis to support the Northern Contract, nothing more. It did not say that the Emperor should not rule."

"Oh true enough but whether or not that's the case here's what those fools see. A divided south. And that will cause every fool on the mainland to start scheming over just how far they can push things, which side they can defy and maybe even how they can set the two squabbling. That letter is a kindling flame that could set the whole north ablaze."
"Tholarg is writing up a letter to send out now that the blockade is gone. We're going to stand by the Contract, even if Aed doesn't require us to. I'm sure there will a lot of fancy wording to it but that's the important bits."
"I heard your Father is leading the forces besieging the climb. I'd go offer support but the whole thing'll most likely be over before we could get there."
