A keen warrior, he claimed the chiefdom of Riellealasil through right of public support, outdoing rival Tukoa in winning the blessing of the elders. At an impressive 14 and a half feet, Orlok is an intimidating sight on the battlefield. Despite this, Orlok has another interest; Exploration of the world. Although the position of Riellealasil makes this dangerous, he carries it out regardless
Kukoa-General: Warchief Kukoa is does not possess the strength of Orlok, though he instead has a sharp mind for strategy and so has opted down the route of a commander, modeled after that of the "south" rather than the Welbali traditional "lead from the front" approach. Note that "South" in this case also refers to many northern nations. Although styled after the south, Kukoa does not order his soldiers to do anything he wouldnt be willing to do himself and holds great respect in the warrior circles. Although the son of Tukoa, Orlok does not question his Warchiefs loyalty.
History:
"Before my grandfathers grandfathers grandfather was born, our lands were free. They were our good places. Our gods live here, in the trees and the rivers. They protect us, watch over us. We were content, we hunt, we had homes, friends, families; we had a good life.
But the Vaekirate disturb the gods. They come and take what is ours. They put us to sleep with worn promises and when we wake all we had is gone, stolen! They would take our children and turn them to the worship of "Aedak", bah!
We ask only for respect; Respect for the old ways. But the Vaekirate poison minds with terrible lies about us; they do not understand so they lie! So sometimes we must fight! There can be no peace, no peace with Aed's followers! Men of fire and gold and Lies! There can be no peace, only war!"
-Chieftain Hufai, in response to his excommunication and the beginning of the sixth Welbali mutiny.
They call themselves the Welbali, "Stone Children" (Singular: Welbal) and they inhabit their ancestral home of Riellealasil.
Riellealasil has long since been deprived of an extended period of independence, even before the Survaek conquered the North the Giantmen of Riellealasil lived under foreign rule, being a part of Eshara longer than the memory of even the oldest of elves can recall and Welbali tales make mention of another Empire before that, though the reliability of these old tales is questionable. Yet despite all this, they were content. Eshara permitted them to continue their worship and cultural observations, and the Welbali lent their unwavering loyalty to Eshara in return. Even now, under Survaek, it is cultural independence that they seek, not political.
Perhaps it is in the blood of Welbali or perhaps it is a pragmatic strategy, whatever the case, it is generally accepted that they couldn't care less about foreign rule as long as their ways are left in peace. When disturbed however, they have proven they are more than willing to become a recurring problem. Following the Survaek occupation, the Vaekirate attempted to seed Aedak into the region. The results were widespread uprisings. These would generally slaughter any follower of Aed they could get their hands on and then disband themselves and return to their homes. These were referred to as the "Welbali mutinies" and it is commonly believed that missionaries to Riellealasil are doomed. Obviously these uprisings and their consequences, combined with the attacks of the wasteland orcs, the Welbali population changes are umpredictable. When charted, it looks more like someone has drawn a mountain range than a chart. Making Riellealasil a vassal has apparently solved the problem, with the Welbali apparently seeing it as the Empire relenting and allowing them to have their traditional ways. The Vaekirate has met stern resistance with attempts at conversion. It is easy to tell where their loyalties lie.
The Welbali believe that everything is alive and interconnected. They believe that at first there was no men, no elves, no giants; only the minerals, plants and earth and that all races came from these.
When the vassalge was created they quickly readopted their traditional ways (Which they had secretly been attempting behind the scenes regardless) and the elders appointed a chieftain. It is important to note that the Chieftain, though commonly called a "Chief" is above the other Chief positions, such as Warchief and Waterchief, who may also be referred to simply as "Chief". As such, he is sometimes referred to as the "Overchief" or "High Chief" when in the presence of others, though others prefer to use full titles.
