Bron nodded. It took a long time for news to travel out to the frontier, but the tension between the Ikegami and the Commonwealth had been building for years and was well know to anyone with an hear toward political intrigue. He wasn't surprised to hear that things were finally coming to a head, but it made him feel a little anxious. A great war in the east would disrupt all of the north and he didn't like the idea of Sayoko being dragged into a conflict of that scale.
"If it doesn't resolve peacefully," he asked slowly, "I reckon your father will need you back at home to lead the Ikegami troops?"

Sayoko nodded, she'd been training more fervently lately in an attempt to prepare for the possibility of war but one could only prepare so much and even with preparations one could easily face their own death in battle due to a lucky enemy blow, Sayoko had accepted that decades ago though she did not relish the idea.
"I assume so, I am the heir and I've been trained to fight for several decades now, it isn't like I could just abandon my people like that."

"Of course not," Bronsyn said, "I just hope it doesn't end up coming to war. I'd hate to see you get hurt... and well," Bron reddened slightly again and his accent was slipping more into its rural roots. "uhm, I don't know. All these years you've lived - I'm only just starting to get to really know you. Our... friendship... must seem like just a fleeting hour to someone like you and now so much is happening to pull it away all the faster."
He looked down and pulled on a long blade of green grass growing close to the stump he was sitting on. He'd honestly been trying not to think of her so much in the past few months. It was hard, she seemed to constantly be invading him mind, but he'd told him self it was no good. Everything, they're race, their class, their duties dictated that they stay away from each other. He'd almost convinced himself that he could live just fine without being with Ikegami Sayoko and then she'd come flying in on a Gryphon and broken his resolve into the thousand little pieces. If he hadn't loved her so much, he probably would have been furious.
The blade of grass broke with a taut snap and he looked back at her, his brown eyes sad and and worried. "How long will you be with me?" he asked, "Before returning to your father?"

Sayoko shrugged lightly leaning against his shoulder and staring up into the sky, the sky was clear, the air warm but not unbearably so and she was finding herself rather comfortable. It was not something she gave much thought, the discrepancies in their lifespans, she didn't find it too important to think about, by that logic no elf should have any meaningful interaction with humans or goblins or any race with a smaller lifespan.
"I suppose but it only means that we need to make the most of the time we have right? No sense letting it get in the way right, Bron?"
She laughed and fell back, laying on the grass and just soaking in the sun.
"Relax and live a little, go out and seize the day as they say."

He looked down at her and smiled, before throwing himself down beside her. He rolled over, "You mean like this?" he asked and leaned in to kiss her, his hand brushing the smooth silk of her dark hair and the stubble of is beard scratching her skin slightly.

Sayoko found herself surprised by the sudden boldness but by no means unappreciative as she reached up to wrap her arms around his neck, pulling him closer as she returned the kiss, her heart was beating so fast and she couldn't be happier. Finally, she had to breathe and reluctantly broke the kiss and looked up at him, smiling so much she felt like her face might split.
"I have been waiting for you to do that for a while now, I thought I might have to do it myself for a moment." She reached up to stroke his beard and breathed in deeply before leaning in to kiss him again.

He kissed her firmly back on the lips, then raised his head and looked lovingly down at her laying in the grass. Her happy face and words gave more confidence to his desirers and he finally had the courage to ask her for what he'd never thought possible. He was still of almost certain that she would reject his dream, but right now he didn't care. Even if she could only reject him, he had to ask.
"Stay with me Sayoko, while your father and I both still live, put aside your duties for a few decades and make the most of a life with me, while we can. With all you've done already and all you shall eventually have to do for your county, take a half dozen decades more or less to set it aside and be my wife here in Elon. I love you, more than anything in this world and..." he hesitated, trying to keep up his confidence as he continue to talk, " .... And I know I can't be what your nation needs in an prince, or give you elven heirs to carry your people forward. I'll fade away too quickly for that, but while I'm here..." He took her hand in both of his, almost pleading in the gesture, "I want to be yours, Sayoko and I want you to be mine. Please, marry me."

The proposition was sudden and a shock to Sayoko, certainly she'd considered it as a future goal but she'd never expected Bron to ask so suddenly. Staying in Elon for decades was easy for an elf, they had so much time ahead of them that she would still be young when Bron had passed on but it was a sobering thought, leaving her people for so long, of course she would visit her family possibly frequently, Bron would be with her and in extremis Bron would understand her going to war with her people.
Could she give up the life she'd grown so accustomed to in order to be happy with him? The idea was simultaneously exciting and scary, she would be making a momentous decision. But the more she thought about it, the more she found she wanted it. She'd been so fascinated with Elon as soon as she arrived for the tournament years ago, and the idea of working with Bron on the frontier sounded fun, so why not then? Hadn't she just told Bron to go out and seize the moment, how could she tell him to do that and not do it herself?
"I...that is a big proposal Bron, a big change to move out here to live my life with you....but I think I want to, you're right in that my time of mandatory service in the army is over, and until my father passes I have few official duties, I could certainly get away with spending my time here with you. And I have always enjoyed my time in Elon and with you, life is short for you and I hardly think it too troublesome to spend some years here with you. In extremis I would have to go home to my people, times of war or great crisis but-"
She paused, looking him in the eye, further strengthening her resolve.
"So, yes I accept, I accept gladly."

Bron wasn't sure if he wanted to laugh or cry, he was happy. Unable to say anything right away, he just pulled her close and hugged her tightly. "We will be happy," he promised, "And I love you so much." He kissed her then long and deeply.
It was the best day of his life.
