History:
When the dust settled from the last great war the Jotun found themselves with a great deal of territory to control and a government unsuited to the task. Jotun Thanes will only ever answer to the authority of a Jarl. This was less of a problem on the mainland where the Jarl was only a week or two away but when the far north was colonized some of the more rebellious thanes used the great distance of Jarl Tholarg to attempt a return to the old ways and gods. Thane Gudrik while leader of the expedition only had limited power over other thanes. To quell their heresy and infighting Gudrik proclaimed himself Jarl of the Northern Jotun and proclaimed his brother Tholarg the High Jarl and his overlord. Tholarg allowed his brother's proclamation to stand, and upon Gudrik's death the title passed to his son Eldgan Firebreather, cementing the hereditary claim of the line. The Northern Jarldom is currently ruled by Jarl Thodram Bloodtooth.
During the reign of Bjorn Swordbreaker the jotun's holdings on the mainland had grown such that installing a governor had become a necessity. But the north had proven that the jotun thanes would at best treat any given the posting mild indifference and worst open mockery. Instead Bjorn gave his half brother Falstag Windcaller the right to claim the mainland holdings as the Jarldom of Lansfall. Falstag though old still rules Lansfall.
