Naozumi stood immediately, turning to face the Grandmaster, he had little love for the wardens, if any but murder was intolerable to him and rebels would only cause chaos in the realm. His hands slipped idly to his belt where his sword would have been if he'd carried it to the funeral a habit born of years of warfare.
"Has there been any statement made by these rebels? If they've gotten bold enough to assassinate an Imperial Governor then they might be preparing to move more boldly now."
Naozumi turned to face the Emperor wondering how the man would react, Naozumi would offer to send troops but he wondered if that would be too bold for the situation.

Cadoc drummed his fingers on the table, lost in thought. If the Imperial Governor had been assassinated, than things we're unraveling more quickly than he had thought since the Vizier's death. '' These rebels must be brought to justice. '' Lord Carawyn said speaking for the delegation, before Cadoc interrupted him. '' I think we can all agree that the realm needs stability. Despite the death of the governor, I believe the election should continue as planned. Unless His Majesty intends to nominate another candidate. '' The quicker a Vizier was put into place, the better. He didn't want his son getting ideas with Imperial law seeming to lapse in the West. Order had to be kept.

Vokoryn II had been worried about something like this. General Haie wasn't known for his timeliness, but missing the funeral would have been a new low altogether for his reputation. The Emperor had hoped there might be some benign explanation, bad weather perhaps, but now his worst fears had been confirmed, and he would need to make a statement right now to address them.
His Majesty stood and turned to face Grandmaster Carok Ironbelly. "Thank you for your swift travel to bring us this urgent news, Grandmaster. You do honor to Aed with your humble adherence to Duty. I trust your Order, along with the ample Surv-Akur and loyal Juturnan forces in the Protectorate, to bring justice to whoever plotted this and eradicate whatever heresy has motivated such treason. For the moment, if some rest and food would do you well, you are free to take a seat and join the Commemoration Feast of his late Excellency Ishui Seldu."
Emperor Vokoryn II then turned to face his vassal-lords. "The election will continue as planned, and a new governor will be assigned to Juturna. We must not overreact to this situation, however tragic. That would only play right into the hands of the honorless heretics who staged this crime."
With that, the Sword of Aed sat back down slowly, motioning for his vassals and guests to do the same.

"Your majesty, if I may be so bold," intoned Koen as he stood perfectly in time with Vokoryn sitting down, "Perhaps such an election is not enough. Though I am not one to pass judgement on the dead someone or something has caused these rebels to take such drastic measures. Perhaps, with their defeat, the continuation of Juturna as a protectorate of the Empire should be reconsidered. Perhaps the Juturnans have a desire for self governance? I would caution you to simply place a new Governor on the throne of Juturna who might fall to the same barbarism. I will leave such discussion for a setting more appropriate than a dining hall but let it be something considered."

Typical Koen, thought the Emperor as the Vaekir made his plea on behalf of the Juturnans. Never misses an opportunity to try and limit my authority.
"Your counsel is duly noted, wise Mouthpiece of Aed," Vokoryn II stated perfunctorily. Of course, he was lying. He thought Vaekir Koen's head must be filled with rotting eggplant to make such a ridiculous assertion on such little evidence. Koen didn't propose the independence of the Southern Tribes when a few dozen steppe bandits killed a high-level bureaucrat, or question Byrnia's rulership when a large band of highwaymen managed to take the life of a noble. No, Vaekir Koen I clearly had his own plans for the North, plans that Emperor Vokoryn II Khaitis was not going to let come to fruition if he could help it.
_____
As dozens of servants carried platters and serving-bowls away from the table, the Emperor led his vassals into the palace courtyard. He stood at the top of the flight of stairs leading to the entrance, the two candidates a few steps below, facing his assembled vassals in the open space below.
"Now without further ado, let us move to fulfill his late Excellency's last request. The North is to elect a Vizier from among the two candidates before you. We will keep this simple: Speaking one at a time, let each vassal-lord -or their representative in their absence- declare their choice. My trustworthy scribe will tally the results and, according to the weighted voting measures you are all familiar with, announce the winner."

Lukene gra Otsana stepped forward, bowing before the emperor and the candidates respectfully. "The Wolfwyrd Clan places its votes in favor of Grandmaster Adjuran Sujjid."

Naozumi stood after her and walked to stand beside her, bowing to the Emperor and each candidate.
"I too vote for Adjuran Sujjid."

Lord Carawyn gave a nod to the former King Cadoc before rising. '' The Sefti-Navaren Commonwealth votes for Adjuran Sujjid. '' With both Ikagami and Commonwealth behind Sujjid, the election was essentially decided.

Elder Urag stood up. "The Firetooth Clan stands with Admiral Sujjid, may Aed grant her wisdom." He glanced at both the Vaekir and Sujjid.

Tholarg could count votes as easily as the next. "Sujjid." He said almost dismissively.

Casomir decided best to stick with his guns, regardless of if it meant swimming against the proverbial tide. Casomir's honor would not allow him to think differently. "The Kingdom of Hessnya vote for Ishui Veliu" was all Casomir would say.

Azlyn and the rest of the Elonese nobles had discussed the matter of the election in a long meeting. Chello had traveled to New Byrnis on their behalf to interview Grandmaster Ishui and Admiral Sujjid and research their options. She had brought back reports and string council in favor of Admiral Sujjid. It has taken some time, but she'd convince them that Sujjid would best benefit Elonese interests. It seemed the rest of the north also liked what Sujjid had to offer. When Casomir alone voted against her, Azlyn found himself respecting the Hassnyan king all the more. It was a bold move to stand against the woman who was clearly going to be the next Vizier of the North. He was half tempted to stand with him just for susport to his neighbor and friend, but today wasn't the time to let his rash whims carry him away.
Standing, Azlyn faced the high table, "On behalf of Elon and all the lords and people, I vote for Admiral Sujjid."
Where she was seated, Chello smiled slightly and looked up at Adjuran. Since the election had been announced, she had been doing what she could to sway not only Elon, but has many of Elon's allies in Adjuran's favor. It was true enough that many of the nations favored Sujjid regardless, but it was good to see that with only one exception the north was practically united behind one leader. It was impressive and Chello thought it was a good sign for the future of the Empire here in the north and for Adjuran's tenure as their Vizier.

There was no contest here. "Twelve votes for Grandmaster Architect Ishui Veliu," the scribe began, "and one-hundred eighteen votes for Grandmaster Merchant Adjuran Sujjid. Sujjid is the winner, and shall hencefort be known as her Excellency Adjuran Sujjid, Vizier of the North."
